Ganglion Cyst - is that What the Bump on My Wrist Is?

All of a sudden, you notice a bump on the back of your wrist. Do you worry about it or do you just ignore it and hope it goes away. Perhaps it is a Ganglion Cyst. The only place to find the true diagnosis is from your doctor. Ganglion Cysts have been around since the dawn of man. No one
knows what causes them; they just know that they are fluid filled cysts (jelly like fluid is present in the Ganglion Cyst) that are generally located by the joint of the wrist, elbow or knee.

Your doctor may do several tests or just one test to give you a complete and appropriate diagnosis. Ultrasound is used sometimes and x-rays can show the Ganglion Cyst. They may suggest an MRI test but this is rare due to the cost involved in this kind of test. No matter the doctors suggestion on tests if the diagnosis is Ganglion Cyst then you will need treatment.

In the days of old, people referred to these as Bible Bumps. The reason is that Ganglion Cysts are diagnosed in women more than men and since women did most of the cooking, cleaning and fieldwork, the cysts had to be taken care of as quickly as possible. The wife would pull out the huge family Bible, while she placed her hand on the table or floor her husband or friend would drop the heavy book upon the wrist of the patient.

I like the way you included a little history too. Great job. :-)

Awesome. Is it true that they're often associated with old injury areas (eg: an old ankle break)? I enjoy your work so much.

I had this issue a few years ago. My doc told me if it's not painful, don't worry about it. He also thought to tell me to not bother hitting it with a book because it could make it hurt worse if it didn't hurt already. He also told me that yes, they can be treated this way. Glad mine went away! =o)

Great article. A friend of mine gets these every so often and her boyfriend smacks them with a small board.

WOW, smashing it with a Bible. I think if I ever get one I'll go with something more scientific. Cool article, thanks!
