The holiday season is not just a time when consumers go out to shop for gifts. It's also a time for people to commit crimes against innocent people, particular those who appear to be most vulnerable.

Make certain that you take the proper precautions to ensure that you holiday shopping excursions be secure and safe,

Here are some tips for you to make note of:

Park Wisely

Of course, we know one of the pains of holiday shopping is finding a decent parking space and, when one opens up, we take it while we can get it.

There are, however, some things to watch out for when you choose a parking space.

Make sure there is plenty of light, if you park at night and, no matter what time of day you shop, do not park near a large vehicle like a van or SUV, because someone can easily accost you, without being seen.

If you see anyone lingering near your car when you are coming back to your park, the best thing to do is to wait until they leave and then proceed towards your vehicle, with your keys already in hand. Always remember to check under your car and in the back seat before you get in. Once you do enter your car, get in as quickly as you can and lock the doors.

If you really have to leave, but are afraid to go back to your car, most malls should have people in security that you can ask to accompany you to where you've parked.

Be Aware of Your Surroundings

It's easy to get distracted when you are in the midst of holiday shopping.

Trying to remember everything on your shopping list or having to carry several bags at a time on your way back to your car can definitely sidetrack your attention and that is what criminals look for.

Never be so involved in the busyness of your shopping chores that you neglect to be aware of your surroundings. If something or someone doesn't seem quite right, distance yourself from them as soon as possible. If you need to yell or scream, do it. I know someone who carries a whistle around their neck to blow, just in case. The last thing a criminal wants is to draw attention to himself or herself.

To really be on the safe side, I'd advise you to take a friend or relative with you when you holiday shop, to be a second pair of "eyes" for you.
