So You Think You Can Dance Winner 2008: Joshua Allen

An Non-Dancer's Viewpoint

I love the show "So You Think You Can Dance" on Fox Television. I don't know the first thing about dancing. Never have. And I have several left feet. But being one who can't does not mean I will be one that teaches dance, either. In this case, that cliche breaks down completely.

But I do know talent when I see it (even though I am not a judge and look nothing like Simon Cowell, David Hasselhoff, or Mary Murphy). And whereas "American Idol" is dotted with the occasional not-so-talented (Sanjaya, anyone?), "So You Think You Can Dance" is always loaded. From
watching several episodes and becoming enthralled by the crazy legs versatilty of Benji Schwimmer in Season Two, I have watched countless dancers come and go on the show and have been constantly amazed, thrilled, entertained, mesmerized, and moved.

And I don't know anything about dancing.

Watching Season 4 "So You Think You Can Dance" was simply amazing. Although they were missing the choreograpy talent of Shane Sparks in Season 4, it did not stop other great choreographers, like Mia Michaels and Jean-Marc Genereux, from putting together some unforgettable dance numbers. And the dancers were phenomenal, rising to the challenge of difficult routines like professionals.

This year had its surprises, like each year always does. When Kherrington Payne and Will Wingfield were voted off the show early on, I was shocked. That Joshua Allen and Stephen "Twitch" Boss, both Hip-Hop style dancers, made it to the Final Four was also amazing. Not that I did not think they deserved to win (because I had actually hoped Hokuto "Hok" Konishi, whose style was Hip-Hop, would win in Season 3), but that I simply did not expect them to win. Placing in the Final Four with Katee Shean (whose dancing was so beautifully rendered every performance that I thought she should win by default) and Courtney Galiano, who was just fun to watch (she was so vibrant), the two guys were up against two trained performers.

Why is the sky always the limit? Why can't the limit be Mars or something? ;)

I believe that each dancer is so privileged to even be in the top four. The top four was also a great choice and im glad to have seen jousha win and although he's not the best he inspires me by so far.i love this show and like he said for all the dancers out there like me that believe they cant do it just keep going for your dream.dont ever give up and remember.....................THE SKY IS THE LIMIT!

Katee was technically the best dancer, but each one of the final four had a special asset: Courtney had heart, Twitch had personality, Joshua had strength. I figured it could go any way, and I think Joshua was a fine choice as a winner, so congrats to him! I also thought the $50K for Katee was nice, but inappropriate. We decided it was because she still had to dance two numbers and they didn't want her to be too bummed to perform well ;) !

Agreed, Charlotte. They need to revamp the prize system a little bit. I know all these guys will end up getting good jobs in the industry and in movies, etc., but, hey, give them a little financial incentive as well. It's not like "So You think You Can Dance" isn't making any money off the talent of relative unknowns who, by the time the season is halfway over, are all dancing STARS -- so a little more wealth sharing is in order...

I loved so many of the dancers this year. The show was packed with unbelievable talent this season. While I loved watching Courtney dance from the very beginning, I really appreciated how much she grew over the course of the competition. I kind of understand how she edged out Chelsie although I have to say that girl was a stick of dynamite as well. In truth, Twitch was the only one in the competition who had NO professional training. Joshua had a little bit that he bartered for by doing odd jobs around the studio. It wasn't much, true, but Twitch had zero, zip, nada. For that reason alone, I would have loved to see him win. What he was able to do in the final few episodes was just unbelivable. But the truth is I loved them all and didn't see any way they could pick a loser. I do have a problem, however, with the fact that Katee received $50,000 for being the top girl while Twitch - - the second place winner overall - - walked away with nothing. Sorry, that idea is just flawed!
