Lesson: Embellishments

I. Concept: Melody - embellishments

II. Context: Music also uses ornamentation, as when extra tones are added to a melody to decorate it.

III. Objectives:

1. Cognitive- understand that music can be embellished or decorated.

2. Affective- appreciate the beauty of musical embellishments.

3. Psychomotor - be able to create own embellishments based on a plain melody and perform it in class.

IV. Materials:

Pictures of Baroque, Gothic, and Modern Architecture

Recordings of "Largo" Concerto by Vivaldi

"Aria" from Anna Magdalena by J.S. Bach

"Talk to Me" by Thomas

V. Equipment:
CD player

Overhead Projector

VI. Lesson Proper

1. Announcements

2. Review of previous lesson

3. Motivation: Show the pictures of different architectural styles while listening to recordings.

4. Activity: Divide the class into groups of four or five and make them choose a simple song. Ask them to create their own embellishments which they will later perform in class.

5. Explain that one of the decisions of composers or artists make is whether or not to use ornamentation. This decision will have an important effect on the work they create and the way we experience it.

VII. Evaluation: Were the students able to create their own embellishments to the simple melody they chose? How did it affect the music and the listeners?
