Sony Expanding the Closed Beta for Playstation Home
Sony is officially extending the closed beta for Playstation Home. This mark the first time Playstation 3 users can get in on the beta since a limited amount of them were selected in the spring and summer of last year.
The journey to the launch of Playstation Home has been a long and frustrating tale for Sony. First announced in March of last year during the Game Developers Conference, Playstation Home wowed many in the press with its
ambitious promises: you can meet with other users, play certain mini-games, build your own living space, visit publisher's spaces, watch movies in the theater and more.
Perhaps the most important feature about Playstation Home is that it is free of charge for the users. Sony makes money by offering advertisement opportunities and charging for micro-transactions.
The original plan for Sony was to launch Playstation Home last fall. As time passed, it became apparent that they won't be able to meet the launch window. Sony finally announced that Playstation Home will be delayed until the spring of 2008. Unfortunately for Playstation 3 users, that wasn't the end of delays as Sony delayed its ambitious project yet again.
Sony now plans on having an open beta for every single Playstation 3 users in the fall of this year. There won't be an official launch of Playstation Home since Sony would rather incrementally upgrade the beta version. This tactic is similar to what Google is doing with their email program, Gmail.
Before then, a certain number of Playstation 3 users can join in on the current ongoing closed beta. To apply for it, you must download the Playstation Home theme on the Playstation Store. You will automatically be admitted into the pool of candidates. Sony will weigh the amount of time you spend using the Playstation Network against other candidates.
Japanese Playstation 3 users got a similar type of invitation last week. Europeans will also get a chance to get in the closed beta of Playstation Home. It looks like Sony is preparing to offer the open beta pretty soon.
