Symptoms of an Allergic Reaction to Earrings

For those getting their ears pierced for the first time to those who already have pierced ears its sometimes difficult to distinguish the difference between an allergic reaction to earrings from the normal problems that occur. By normal I mean things like the stretching of the ear hole
from wearing heavy earrings to soreness and to cuts and bruising that can occur from earring backs being worn too close to the ear to a prick or stab from the earring stem when putting the earring in.

Some people as was my grand mom were allergic to all earrings that weren't real gold or silver. Now you may be saying, "Well, what about earrings for sensitive ears? Wouldn't they work?" For my grand mom, no they didn't work. Sensitive earrings will work for some people but if you are allergic to most earrings wearing a pair of earrings made for sensitive ears over the course of the day can cause some problems. These problems range from swelling of the ear lobe, redness, soreness, discharge of blood, clear ooze that is similar to blood or possible pus.

What are the signs of allergic reactions to earrings? They are swelling of the ear lobe, redness, soreness, bleeding, and clear bloody ooze or pus. In some cases a person can have swelling in the face or neck, fever or a combination of both. The allergic reaction sometimes acts as a typical allergy would but the localization would be centered in, on or around the ears.

Usually it's very easy to spot an allergic reaction and here's one way to do it. If about every time that you wear earrings you notice your ears are oozing clear fluid very similar to blood except that its clear you are probably allergic to earrings. First timers who have just had their ears pierced may normally have blood or clear fluid ooze from them especially every time that they have to rotate the earrings in order to keep the skin of the ear from growing over the earring or over the hole. This may occur for six to eight weeks, as this will allow the ear a recovery time. After that if the ear is still oozing out the ear is likely irritated and is having an allergic reaction.
