Thanksgiving has been noted to be the travel holiday. It is true that most families now abandon the traditional holiday practice of having the family over for dinner for all holidays and instead take trips as a family. Part of this may be due to the fact that families no longer reside in one area but tend to be spread all over the U.S. or even the world. And another part may be a mixture of accessible travel and heavy marketing convincing families and individuals to take an adventure and shed the ways of the timid homebody. What better time to do this than when you have time off from school or work?

I spent the Thanksgiving holiday at South Padre Island. Now images of "Girls Gone Wild" and other crazy Spring Break antics may pop into your minds when I mention SPI. I have experienced some of that aspect of the island but that is not the Padre of winter in which I partook over the holiday weekend honoring The Day of the Bird. Though the weather was warm and breezy, the sky cloudless and the sand warm the crowds were absent and that was heaven.
Winter on South Padre Island is typically for those from up north, or Winter Texans. They come down for the unbearable months of blizzards in their northerly hometowns and savor the sun and surf of the Gulf of Mexico.
