Will John McCain Choose Tom Ridge?
Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain has been campaigning in "The Keystone State" with former Pennsylvania governor, Tom Ridge. Pennsylvania is a key state in the upcoming presidential election; the state has gone to the Democratic candidate since 1988 when George H. W. Bush carried the state.
It's no secret that Tom Ridge and John McCain are long-time friends. Both men have served in the military and have served in the U. S. House of Representatives. John McCain would be wise to consider Tom Ridge as his vice-presidential nominee, because Tom Ridge has several qualities that are appealing to both liberal and conservative voters.
During Tom Ridge's tenure as the governor of Pennsylvania, he cut taxes, initiated many environmentally friendly programs, and even helped to ensure underprivileged children would receive healthcare. In his role as the Secretary of Homeland Security, he brought a level-headed and fair approach to protecting the country against terrorism. Whether or not you agree with the provisions of the Patriot Act, Tom Ridge proved himself to be an efficient leader in an uncharted territory.
Remarks made by John McCain today while on the campaign trail reveal that he is either not seriously considering Tom Ridge, or he is trying to skirt speculations regarding his vice-presidential nominee. John McCain would be hard-pressed to find a better candidate than in the person of Tom Ridge.
Tom Ridge is a perfect fit for John McCain. He compliments John McCain's strong national security platform. He has proven as the governor of Pennsylvania that he is tough on crime and supports the use of the death penalty. Tom Ridge has a common-sense approach to education. He created programs that were geared toward using technology more efficiently in public schools. He has a pro-choice stance on abortion and opposes gay marriage. He also brings a strong business background to the table. He has served on the board of Home Depot, Deloitte LLP, as well as the Hershey Corporation.
