The movies listed here were first released in 2006, so total dollar values may not reflect top performers for the 2006 calendar year. Rankings by IMDB are based on total revenues with cast information and plot outlines provided by yours truly.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Directed by Gore Verbinski, Dead Man's Chest brought in $422,065,649 in 2006. The PG-13 movie starred Johnny Depp and Keira Knightly. In the film, the pirate Jack Sparrow has an unpaid debt to Davey Jones and his army of sea-phantoms. To prevent eternal suffering, Jack must find a way to save himself from becoming one of them.

2. Cars: Directed by John Lasseter, Cars is the tale of animated stock car Lightning McQueen, who while heading to a big race finds the true meaning of friendship and family. With Owen Wilson as the voice of Lightning McQueen, Cars grossed $244,052,771. Rated G.

3. X-Men: The Last Stand. Taking in $234,360,014, Brett Ratner directed this film starring Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry. When a cure is found to treat mutations, the X-Men split up, led by Professor Charles Xavier, and the Brotherhood, a band of mutants led by Xavier's former ally, Magneto. Rated PG-13.

4. The Da Vinci Code: Directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks, this PG-13 movie raked in $217,536,138. A murder inside the Louvre and clues in Da Vinci paintings lead to the discovery of a religious mystery protected by a secret society for 2,000 years.

5. Superman Returns: This film starring Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth, and directed by Bryan Singer, grossed $200,069,408. After visiting the lost remains of the planet Krypton, the PG-13 movie finds Superman returning to Earth to save the people and win back the love of heroine Lois Lane.

6. Ice Age: The Meltdown. Raking in $195,329,763, this Carlos Saldanha animated feature is a sequel to the hit movie Ice Age. This time, though, the ice age is over and Diego, Manny and Sid must warn everyone before their valley is destroyed.
