Should Overweight Consumers Pay Extra for Services From Southwest Airlines & Other Businesses?

Super-Size Me

Following the recent decision by Southwest Airlines to begin enforcing their 22-year-old policy requiring overweight passengers to purchase two airline seats, a number of other companies and consumer groups have demanded that customers of size begin
coughing up premium rates for their products and services.

Southwest Airlines led the charge with their policy to penalize large customers, dating back to the 1980's. According to the policy, any passenger whose derriere spills over onto the adjacent seat is required to purchase two airline tickets at the price of the original seat. Roxanne Haberstrohm, spokesperson for Southwest says, "Ninety percent of the complaints we receive from our passengers stem from being subjected to the overflow of obese passengers sitting next to them." And the problem isn't based solely on comfort, either.

Statistics from the National Center for Health Statistics indicate that the American population's weight has been creeping up since the 1990's. More than thirty percent of American adults over the age of 20 are obese. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that the average weight of American adults has ballooned by 10 pounds. The extra weight of these chubby vagabonds has translated into an additional $275 million dollar expenditure to burn more than 350 million additional gallons of jet fuel resulting in 3.8 million extra tons of carbon dioxide released into the air.

In an effort to contain the prices of airline tickets, carriers have initiated creative measures to compensate for the additional weight of their plump passengers such as pitching out phones, carpeting on cabin floors, pillows, drop-down trays, flight attendants, light fixtures, stereo headsets, co-pilots, blankets, air conditioners, communication equipment, emergency oxygen masks, heavy metal eating utensils, restrooms, thick magazines and even life vests and air sickness bags. Other ideas under consideration are dispensing with unnecessary Plexiglas windows and seat cushions in favor of wooden bench seats.

As a person who is right-heighted (under 5'2") I must insist that I get a discount. I don't need all the extra height they build into airplanes, cars, trains, or even houses; why do I have to pay for the extra headroom? In fact, if the airlines just ran short-only flights, they could double-stack people like me. Wouldn't that decrease my ticket costs by at least 30%?

YES! Although like harry, my personal motto is "I'm 6'2 livin in a 5'6 world" and a coach seat on a packed flight is torture. When i worked for the airline, usually the "bigger" pax already bought 2 seats for themselves ahead of time. I remember one specific instance where the computer wouldn't allow me to put the 2 seats next to each other, HAHA.

I think they ought to just make plane seats bigger and shut the f**k up about it. THe whole world is made for people 5'7" and 140 pounds. Some of us are 6'2" and 260. The fact is that with better nutrition, even peopel who aren't crazy overweight don't fit so well into seats designed back when we grew our people smaller. Ever raised a pet on Science diet? Did you notice how much bigger that pet was than other pets you have had? The fact is that fat isn't the ONLY reason that people are getting bigger. We need to suck it up and make seating that is commensurate with the average size of people rather than the size that we THINK they should be.

Here Here! Excellent article! I think it's high time we do something about all these fat people everywhere and as soon as I lose that extra hundred pounds me and my wife Tubby Jo are gonna join the crusade!

You forgot the most important thing Allen -- blubber is a looming homeland security issue. It is also why the well fed (aka funded) INS can't keep up with all those skinny American's. Mark my words Al Queda's next plot is to put botulism in Metabolife and Big Macs. Wonderful and very laughable -- Thank You!!!!

Great article, not as offensive as I thought it was going to be. As someone who has traveled 18 hours in a cramped seat, I would have loved to pay extra for the seat. I think it should be an option for everyone. But if I'm going to pay extra for my girth then mothers are going to have to pay for their children taking up seats on the bus.
