A local Michigan tradition ended this year when it was announced that Ozzfest would be reduced to a single date in Dallas. For years Detroit's faithful rock fans flocked to Clarkston's DTE Energy Music Theater for the
traveling metal show and the announcement that there would be no festival this year was met with disappointment. Fortunately, not long after the announcement was made the sponsors behind other rock festivals Taste of Chaos and the Vans Warped Tour announced they would be filling the Summer metal void with the Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival. Even better, in this sluggish economy, it was announced that tickets would be lower than most Summer festivals. The event opened July 9 in Washington with 14 bands on three stages including Ozzfest veterans Disturbed and Slipknot as headliners. The nine hour festival rolled into DTE on Saturday, August 9 and despite numerous thunderstorms was a huge success.
The festival's two secondary stages were side by side allowing for an uninterrupted flow of music as one band began to play as another left the other stage. However, music was not the only thing provided throughout the day. There was plenty of merchandise tents and sponsor booths including samples of Rockstar Energy drinks and Jagermeister and many opportunities to meet and greet the band members. There was a wrestling ring set up and a BMX ramp but due to the rain the ramp didn't get much action and, of course there was plenty of food booths as well. Unfortunately, the large crowd made it hard to actually stand in line to get anything so my group skipped the lines altogether and went for food after the show ended.
