The worst data disaster imaginable happened; your laptop computer, with all of your business files and tons of personal data got wiped out somehow. Youve been to a computer store or your computers tech guy, and other than look at your hard drive with the same confused stare your dog has when another dog comes on TV, he pretty much couldnt do anything with it. You know its your own fault for not backing up, but youre left with no other real options; youre going to have to look into some data recovery companies.
The good news is that data recovery from laptop drives tends to be very successful, because laptop drives are designed for mobility, and have considerations in place to stop hard drive crashes from becoming too severe. It is far less likely, for instance, for the heads on a laptop drive (which read information off of the disk) to come into physical contact with the platters (which hold the data). As a result, recoverability is probably better for most laptop drives than any desktop drive.
Of course, the data recovery process itself is extremely difficult, and that translates to extremely expensive for the average user. Just opening a drive requires a class 100 clean room, which costs upwards of $60,000, so any company that is able to even attempt data recovery is taking on a considerable cost; on top of that, there are costs for data recovery engineers and other technology development costs.
The silver lining is that the data recovery process is rapidly becoming streamlined, and some companies are able to turn out dozens of cases a day, making the cost of a data recovery lab more than manageable. The cost to consumers is lowered. Whereas many companies are still charging the old rates of $2000 and upwards per case, some very capable companies charge under a thousand dollars for laptop data recovery-even as low as $300 for very light physical problems.
