Penguin Receives Knighthood in Norwegian Guard

Dapper Fellow Not Related to the Dark Knight

NO, NOT BATMAN - AND NOT THE DARK KNIGHT'S ENEMY

With news of The Dark Knight on everyone's lips these days, there is news of yet another Knight who is far from eclipsing Batman on the headlines - but nevertheless holds the rare distinction of being a "real" knight.

And, this rather darkly-clad Knight is a penguin. Not Batman's arch-enemy, the Penguin, but a real life-sized Emperor penguin named Nils Olav.

KNIGHTED ON FRIDAY

Nils Olav, a three-foot tall emperor penguin and full-time resident of the Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland, was knighted into the Norwegian King's Guard last Friday in a grand ceremony in recognition of "loyalty, courage, and good endowments".

PENGUIN OF PRESTIGE

Nils Olav's ceremony and knightly dubbing were conducted by British Maj. Gen. Euan Loudon on behalf of Norway's King Harald V. As if to ensure legitimacy of an already rich formal ceremony befitting a penguin, British Maj. Gen. Euan Loudon spoke loudly to Olav, "You, as a penguin, do qualify in every way...for knighthood."

GREAT SURVIVAL INSTINCTS - in the face of danger

While uttering the profound words that will henceforth allow Olav to righfully carry the title of "Sir", Loudon attempted to drop his sword to the great bird's shoulders, who, upon seeing the shiny blade coming his way, quite rightly scampered away.
