10 Reasons Why Emmitt Smith is the Greatest Running Back Ever

The day that Emmitt Smith broke the late great Walter Peyton record was a day that will live in the annals of football history. Four years hence of Emmitt Smith quest to obtain the highest level that a running back can achieve, the late Walter Peyton walked into the
Dallas locker room-and as Emmitt lay there with separated ribs, Walter whispered in his ear and said, "this is your time, this is what you were meant to do." And this was all of the inspiration and motivation that he needed to become the all time rushing leader in NFL history, a feat not by any standards easily achieved.

#1 After 13 years in the league Emmitt Smith amassed 18355 yards.

#2 Total yardages from scrimmage-21579

#3 Rushing attempts-4409

#4 Elected to the Pro Bowl8 times, a feat that is unprecedented in this time and age, where as a running back career is shortened by injuries that is why his achievement is an outstanding tribute to his work ethic and goal setting mind set.

#5 And throughout his 15 year career, Emmitt James Smith III-born May, 15thonly had 61 fumbles.

#6 No other running back in NFL history has rushed for more touchdowns, 164 to be exact.

#7 Emmitt Smith total touchdown ratio is 174, another record, only Marshall Faulk has more receiving yards and touchdowns as a running back.

#8 During his career he was elected to the 1st team All-Pro from 1992 to 1995. Emmitt also led the league rushing title for four years in his NFL tenure.

#9 Emmitt was the ultimate power back of his era, if you view the NFL archives-you will be amazed how many tackles that he broke through from beginning to end. In retrospect his running style was very similar to the late Walter Peyton. This is why his rushing yards per game is 81.2%; this rates him among the top 5 in NFL history.

#9 Elected to 6 all conference players association by several syndicated sports news writers.

#10 For seven years Emmitt Smith remained upon the top 5 Fantasy Players in his position. There is no denial of where his influence is transferred among the players of today-this will be the foundation where all running backs take their cue.

Really good article here Al, even though I'll go to my grave believing that not only was Walter Payton the greatest running back of all-time, but the greatest all-around football player EVER!! I really think Emmitt benefited immensely from playing with several Hall of Fame teammates a=or perennial all-pros while Walter kept churning out 1,800 yards a season while playing for some absolutely abysmal Bears teas in the 1970s - particularly when everyone on the field and in the stand knew he was getting the ball on two of every thrree plays the Bears ran!!! Still, while my opinion differs here, I must say ..... GREAT WORK once again!!! And you're right on time with this NFL stuff by the way!!!! Great reading !!!!
