There was much controversy after the women's individual uneven bars competition in gymnastics. When the uneven bars were over Nastia Liukin and He Kexin were tied with a scored of 16.725. The tiebreaker that was in place gave the win to He Kexin. This led to a huge uproar in which everybody blamed China for being the evil bad guys, just like they have been the entire Summer Olympics. China had nothing to do with the result though. The tiebreaker rule is very clear and was immediately decided upon by the judges. It's not China's fault that the American gymnasts and coaches haven't taken the time to pick up an Olympic gymnastics rulebook.

But to make sure this "controversy", or what I call following the rules precisely, doesn't happen again I propose that we change how tiebreakers work. Here are a few ideas.

First Idea on How to Change the Uneven Bars Tiebreaker: Do Over
Let both Nastia Liukin and He Kexin do their routine over again. Whichever one does the better routine wins. If Nastia Liukin and He Kexin get the same score again then they go again. Continue to do dueling uneven bars until somebody gets a higher score than the other.

Second Idea on How to Change the Uneven Bars Tiebreaker: Coin Toss
A coin toss might not seem very fair by why not? Either Nastia Liukin gets the gold medal and He Kexin gets the silver medal or Nastia Liukin gets the silver medal and He Kexin gets the gold medal. I don't see a loser here.

Third Idea on How to Change the Uneven Bars Tiebreaker: Ladies Decide
Eliminate Nastia Liukin and He Kexin and let the other gymnasts that competed in the Uneven Bars vote on which one was better. Let somebody other than the judges decide for once.

Fourth Idea on How to Change the Uneven Bars Tiebreaker: Bronze Winner
Forget Nastia Liukin. Forget He Kexin. Let's toss them both out and give the gold medal to Yilin Yang, the bronze medal winner. Heck, let's give her all three medals.

I also agree with you about the riskiness of investing in sports collectibles. Unfortunately, the passions of people, even in a recession, cause them to bid $3850 for Michael Phelps cards. I wouldn't do that myself.

Or. they could have strapped both competitors to a giant novelty coin, and have one of the New American Gladiators toss it. Winner is whoever lands face up, and thus survives the ordeal.

I liked the article, except for the fact you never said how the tie breaker is decided. That or I missed that part..

Nice article . . .these judges for the gymnastics appear to be very inconsistent! It don't matter, though . .the U.S.A. is still the best!!
