Pregnancy brings with it numerous decisions that need to be made. Six months pregnant I’ve been facing up to all of them. Lately all sorts of opinions and comments have come forth on a trend that has been developing amongst women in the United States. More and More women are opting out of the conventional hospital birth and instead just staying at home to have their babies. This growing trend towards home birth has everybody taking a position. In my explorations through the vast realms of the Internet I’ve seen numerous reactions to the subject of home birth verses hospital birth. From the majority who view it as dangerous and taking unnecessary risks all the way to the women who fire their midwives, send their husbands out of the room and delivery the baby all alone. And after all the research, to be completely honest, I’m having trouble understanding what the controversy is about. Is home birth and unassisted birth really that shocking?

Prior to World War II hospital births were a very rare occurrence in the United States. Most women had home births. The hospital was only considered as an option in high-risk situations. So why is it treated as taboo and irresponsible amongst Americans today? Furthermore, prior to the 1800’s births were attended to by midwives. To have a man in the room while a woman gave birth was seen as shameful. It is interesting how quickly society in the USA has adapted to viewing hospital birth as the norm and home birth as some sort of strange, life threatening fad engaged in by liberals and hippies.

I knew nothing about childbirth when I was first pregnant in 1975, so I went and got a bunch of books from the library. When I got done reading them, there was no way you could have gotten me into a hospital! These books were published at a time when some women were trying to do natural childbirth in hospitals and doctors were routinely knocking them out anyway. I did my homework, was unable to find a local midwife. I had the first baby at home with a terrified and incompetent husband. The second one I had in England, with an arranged NHS home birth, midwife and all, but as I was prone to precipitate labor and it was a weekend, they dragged in some RAF dr who'd never done a home birth and was scared out of his wits. He kept doing exams on me, which would intensify the already strong contractions. Fortunately the midwife showed up eventually, and she'd check the heart rate now and then and say "140" and as long as she kept saying that I wasn't worried. I swore there'd never be a

The !KungSas and Ju'hoan tribes of Africa birth unassisted. About 14% of new moms do it and 43% of moms birthing subsequent children. There was a study done that showed, while homebirth with a midwife in attendance might be slightly safer, the unassisted birth statistics were about equal to the hospital birth ones. I'm planning to freebirth my next child. :)

Nice! I had an accidental unassisted childbirth with my daughter becuase she beat the midwife by about 15-20 miuntes. Thankfully all the equipment was there and ready from a "false alarm" a couple days prior. hehehehehe
