You've had the baby, given birth to the long-awaited new addition to your family. Chances are, so much of your energy and focus has gone into getting to know this new little person and attending to her every need, you may barely notice that your body continues to change and recover from the pregnancy and birthing experience. The postpartum examination that will be scheduled approximately six weeks after the baby's birth is an opportunity for your doctor or medical care professional to check in with the new mother and make sure she is healthy, healing, and her body is adjusting to motherhood. The post-partum examination may feel very much like the many prenatal care visits the woman may have had while she was pregnant. She will be weighed and may be asked to provide a urine sample to test for any infections or abnormalities. Additionally, her blood pressure will be taken and a general physical exam will be performed.
The doctor or health care professional will examine the breasts and ask how breastfeeding is going, if the woman has chosen to nurse her newborn. The breasts will be examined for any cracked nipples or signs of infection. This is a good time to share any concerns or questions about breast care and nursing.
An internal examination will be performed to make sure the uterus is returning to its normal pre-pregnancy size. A pap smear may also be performed at this time if it is determined timely. If there was any surgery or episiotomy during the delivery, that will also be checked.
The doctor or health care professional will likely ask about nutrition, rest and self care and inquire whether the new mother is experience any depression or if she has concerns about how things are going during the post-partum adjustment period. Women are often advised to continue taking vitamins as long as they continue to nurse.
