The Michigan Wolverines can now be added to the growing list of Bowl Championship Series casualties. The faulty system has once again cast a dark cloud over the entire college football nation. Everyone had to see it coming, two one loss teams in major conferences coveting one spot in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. It was eminent that another deserving team would be left out of the mix. In the end Florida got the nod, while Michigan was left stunned in disbelief. Both teams were deserving, but Michigan was the better team. The system got it wrong.

The Wolverines played in a tough Big Ten and seemed to walk through the competition. The combination of Chad Henne at quarterback and Michael Hart in the backfield looked unstoppable. Mario Manningham had another great statistical season at wide out along side Steve Breaston. Michigan truly had a dynamic offense. This was coupled with a very tough and aggressive defense. Lead by Lamar Woodley, Michigan's front four were the best in the nation. The team boasted the best run defense in the country. It was no question Michigan’s roster had more talent then Florida’s. No team, not named OhioState, could match Michigan on both sides of the ball.

The BCS voters saw the wealth of talent in the Michigan locker room, and ranked the team second in the country for most of the year. Michigan lead the Florida Gators for seven weeks in the polls. The message was clear; experts thought Michigan had a better football team. It was astonishing to see Florida, on the last day of the regular season, leapfrog over Michigan for send place in the BCS.

People can argue that the teams in the national championship should win their conference, but that's not in the BCS formula. In 2004 Oklahoma did not win their conference title and played in the national championship, and Nebraska did the same in 2002. The BCS set the precedent that conference championships did not matter.

Takeaways
  • Michigan had far more talent then Florida.
  • The game in Columbus proved Michigan and Ohio State were the two best teams.
