Portsmouth, Ohio is at the southern tip of the state and runs along the Ohio River. Being built along one of the most traveled waterways in the early part of the 20th century made this small town a booming spot for industry and commerce and even today it's still possible to see many of the buildings that housed these industries and businesses when Portsmouth, Ohio was one of the centers of Midwest exchange. While Portsmouth, Ohio has seen economic decline, especially in last three or four decades, it has chosen to make itself one of the premier spots for history-buffs and travelers alike with its many tourist attractions.
Portsmouth, Ohio is home to the 1810 House. Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, this home at 1926 Waller Street near downtown Portsmouth, Ohio has a unique history that has been preserved by local volunteers and history lovers with period clothing, furniture, and artwork. It is the headquarters of the Scioto County Historical Society as well, which will give travelers an excellent opportunity to talk one-on-one with Portsmouth historians and curators. Even though The 1810 House is open to visitors most of the year (May through December) Christmas is the best time to visit since they decorate the home beautifully. By far, it is one of the best attractions between Thanksgiving and the New Year Holiday.
Portsmouth, Ohio is along the Ohio River and was once a center of commerce and trade.
