How to Monitor Your Blood Pressure

According to a recent estimate, about 1 out of every 3 adults in the US has high blood pressure and don't even realize it. High blood pressure, if left un-treated, can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure or kidney failure. The only way to tell if
you have high blood pressure is to have it check. Below I have outlines some basic steps to take to monitor your blood pressure.

Step1:
You can purchase a wrist blood pressure monitor at your local drug store or on-line. I use the Omron Wrist Blood Pressure monitor and find it accurate when compared to my doctor's reading.

Step2:
Follow the manufacture's instructions how to use the blood pressure monitor and how to set it up. It's very important you follow the directions closely so you will get an accurate reading.

Step3:
Typical blood pressure is 120/80 but will vary depending on your age and if you suffer from high blood pressure. If your blood pressure reading is in question call your physician immediately and make an appointment.

Step4:
Blood pressure will vary a lot and may not always appear normal. This is why you should take your blood pressure in the morning, during the day at work, and in the evening. Work related stress may elevate your blood pressure during the day and then appear normal in the evening. The wrist blood pressure monitor is small enough to fit in a small bag or jacket pocket.

Step5:
Some blood pressure monitors will keep a history of your daily readings. All you need to do is set the time and date on your monitor so you will have an accurate history of your blood pressure readings.

Step6:
If you see any abnormalities with you blood pressure, call you physician and make an appointment. Bring your blood pressure readings to your doctor so that he can keep them in his file.

Step7:
Remember that high blood pressure, when left un-treated, can cause serious life threaten problems that could have been easily avoided with a single pill.
