How to Control Bank Erosion on Your Backyard Water Feature

Control Erosion so Your Backyard Water Feature Looks Better and Lasts Longer

The water feature in the photo is one I created over the course of three years. There are ponds on three levels as well as the waterfall. I used to have a problem with bank erosion, which is a common problem for many owners of existing backyard water features. Bank erosion is often caused
by soil that was not compacted well during installation. I learned that there are many ways to control soil and bank erosion during construction as well as for existing backyard water features.

If you are installing a new backyard water feature, be sure to include erosion control in part of the development of your project. Try to dig out the area to the depth you need without disturbing the foundation soil. If you do go too deep, make sure to use a tamper to repack the soil that was disturbed while digging. Tamp the edges of the water feature area to be sure the walls are good and solid before putting in the liner. There is also the option of installing pressure treated wood below the grade and attach the pond liner to the wood. Some experts recommend heavy gauge wire covered with a layer of concrete. However, proper grading and a firm foundation are often the best solutions to prevent bank erosion on your backyard water feature.

If you have already constructed your backyard water feature and have noticed that you have a problem with bank erosion, the following solutions will help bring that problem under control. Compact the soil around the edge of your water feature with a tamper. Grade the soil to move away from the pond in an even flow. Add stones to keep water run-off from forming straight lines through the soil. Use plants with large, dense root systems to help absorb water and prevent soil from washing away. If the bank of your backyard water feature is very sloped, create a drain system with stones that form a network of little streams for run-off, similar to a French drain system. Wind the stone beds around plants and other stones for an incredible visual experience.
