Dilettante Chocolates: Fruit Medley Product Review

Cherries, Blueberries, Strawberries & Apricots in Premium White, Milk & Dark Chocolate

When I saw Dilettante Chocolates Fruit Medley in the store, I was excited. Though I would not go so far as to say such a treat is 'healthy', the concept of covering fruit with chocolate is one I love. I indulge infrequently; however, I am unquestionably a
hardcore chocolate snob. Though I tend to prefer handmade or foreign chocolates, I enjoy a few American grab-them-in-a-convenience-store chocolate treats, as well.

On the back of the package is a quick history of Dilettante Chocolates that is impressive and promising. I believe it was being promoted as a high quality chocolate product due to its location in the 'fancy' chocolates section of the store.

I reviewed the ingredient list and noted warnings regarding allergies and cherry pits.

One serving size is listed as 11 pieces, with approximately 5.5 servings per 8 ounce package. Each serving consists of 190 calories: 89 of those from fat.

The chocolate covered fruit medley consists of colored balls similar to M&M's. Biting into them revealed a similar makeup: A thin colored shell around chocolate. The difference being that instead of a nut, the center is a small piece of dried fruit.

It was hard to discern which fruit was which except by color clues, and the chocolate tasted pretty much the same across the different varieties. The taste was awful. I tried every variation more than once to be sure I was giving this product a fair sampling. However, the more I sampled, the more disgusted and disappointed I became. I even tried cleansing my palate in between samplings - to no avail.

I would not classify the chocolate in this product as 'premium' as it seemed to be quite similar in taste, sweetness, and texture to the inexpensive chocolates found most commonly in stores around at Easter, Halloween, and Christmas.

In all fairness, perhaps the version of their dragees that is packaged and sold in grocery stores is of lesser quality than that sold directly from their Mocha Cafes and online store. Perhaps one day I will try this product again, but purchased directly from one of those sources.
