Recently I tackled a home improvement project in my condo, I tore down a very outdated mirrored wall in my dining room. The relief of seeing the terrible mirrored wall come down was watered down by what I found behind the mirror. Lots of stick globs of brown adhesive and areas where the dry wall paper had been pulled away led me to yet another simple home improvement project. You can easily and cheaply fix the dry wall behind your mirrored wall. It won’t cost a lot, but it will take a little patience and elbow grease.

To Repair Your Drywall Behind a Mirrored Wall You Will Need:

Drywall Compound (Mud)
Drywall Spatulas (I like the plastic ones)
Sand Paper
Sand Paper block
Metal Scraper

The first step of this easy home improvement project is to buy a good metal scraper. This will be needed to remove any of the mirror adhesive left behind the mirrored wall your tore down.

Simply place the metal spatula flat on the wall right below the old adhesive. Push up towards the adhesive and starting working it off the wall. DO NOT GAUG YOUR DRY WALL. This will only create more work for you.

Now, once the entire mirror adhesive has been removed you can start really working on repairing the dry wall.

Tip: If your dry wall is really damaged you could cover the entire wall with a thin sheet of drywall and just start fresh.

If your drywall behind the mirror is only mildly damaged, like mine, then you can skip that whole new drywall thing.

Now, I like to run my had over the wall and make a mental note of where any damage is.

Take you plastic spatula and scoop some drywall compound out. Spread it in a thin coat on the dry wall where it is damaged.

Do not apply too much drywall compound. Use the flat edge of the spatula to scrape off any extra.

Now, allow this drywall compound to dry until completely dry.

Use your sand paper to lightly sand the damaged area where you applied the dry wall compound.

Now, use your hand to feel the wall to determine how smooth it is. Visually dry wall compound can be very tricky. It may look smooth under bad lighting a don a wall that is already white. So, turn on the lights and shine on directly on it if you can.

Great tips. Did you write up an article on how you removed the mirrors? That is where I am stuck, with two 4' x 8' mirrors that are a quarter inch thick and very heavy.
