How to Paint and Update an Out Dated Ceiling Fan

Easy Home Improvement Project Anyone Can Do!

Outdated ceiling fans can be easily and cheaply updated with this simple home improvement project. A with a few coats of the right kinds of paint and you will not recognized that old brass ceiling fan. If you are moving and do not want to invest a lot
of money in a home improvement project or a new light fixture you will never get to enjoy, then try these easy steps to updating and outdated ceiling fan for about $12.

To Update An Outdated Ceiling Fan You Will Need:

Spray on Kilz Primer
Spray on Hammer Metal Paint
Blue Painter’s Tape
Newspaper

The first step of this home improvement project is to go ahead and take down the outdated ceiling fan. Taking down the ceiling fan will make this whole home improvement project so much easier.

Clean the outdated ceiling fan thoroughly. I recommend ammonia based cleaner. They cut through grease and grime. They also dry fast!

Now, remove the blades from the ceiling fan. In most cases these are simply held in place with screws.

If you are painting the outdated ceiling fan blades then go ahead and spray on a coat of the Kilz primer from the can. Coat the blades thoroughly and let them dry. I don’t recommend sing the hammer metal spray paint for the ceiling fan blades. Reserve it for the metal parts of the ceiling fan. Use a neutral colored paint to coat the ceiling fan blades. Go for a color that looks like a rich espresso colored wood. No one will ever know the difference. White is also a great color for an updated ceiling fan on a budget.

Now, use your painter’s tape and newspaper to cover any wires and hole sin the ceiling fan. Take you time on this step and get it right. You do not want any of your hammered metal spray paint to get inside the electrical parts of the outdated ceiling fan.

Now, spray on a coat of the Kilz spray on primer. This is an important step I would not skip. If you are using a dark hammered metal spray later, then buy the gray colored Kilz primer.

Let the spray on primer dry.

Now, spray on a coat or two of the hammered metal spray paint. I love the brown hammered metal spray paint from Krylon.

This was a fabulous tip! We just moved into a new house, and tried this with an outdated brass ceiling fan. We used the hammered brown metal paint, and it looks like we just bought a new fan. It looks amazing! Even my husband, who stated multiple times "I don't think this is a good idea..." agrees that it looks SO good. Thanks for the article!
