Building a Combination Desk, Bed and Storage Unit for Your Child

Every one likes to have a place of their own. Their own home, their own workspace at the office, etc. Your children have the same feeling and as they get into their school years it becomes a need. This article provides a way you can give your child his or her very own desk and work area
without taking up any more floor space than the bed they currently have.

Consider combining a bunk bed with a desk and storage, for use only by your child for their own things. The desk can be built into the bottom level of the bunk bed, in several variations of layout. Drawers, chests and hanging areas for sports clothing and equipment can also be built in. The height of the sleeping platform can be as high or low as you wish depending on the layout of the desk top. Some designs just use pull out supports and a fold down top for the writing and typing area of the desk. When it folds up the computer and electronics section is then neatly locked away. This is something your child will really appreciate as they develop an understanding of taking care of their own things.

This combination sleeping, study, storage unit can be themed to match the rest of the room or it can be a special stand alone design. You should get your child involved in this project from the very beginning as it helps build character and sense of ownership of the entire project and the unit when it is completed.

You can find plans on the internet for this unit or you can even take the bed the child uses now and put it up on the desk, storage unit. The unit when done is an elevated bed with ladder and guard rails. It should incorporate storage drawers and can be open on the bottom or you can get creative and have doors which hide the writing desk and work area.

The plans that come will have step by step instructions and working through this with your child will be a great bonding and educational experience for both of you. You may need to modify the plans some to be able to include power outlets and ventilation for the computer unit that every child needs for school work and research on the Internet these days.
