Top Ten Movies of 2006

The top movies of 2006 represent a wide variety of genres from suspense to horror to comedy. Here are some of the best.

(1) Pirates of the Carribean 2

Johnny Depp returned this summer in his star role of Captain Jack Sparrow in the second part to Pirates of the Caribbean. This Walt Disney movie, subtitled Dead Man’s Chest, hit theaters in July and grossed $423,222,000 as of December 4th.

(2) Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

“I wanna go fast!” This movie left us all quoting Ricky Bobby for weeks. The August box office hit featuring Will Ferrell as a Nascar champ made a box office gross of over $162 million, 9% of that from foreign theaters. The sports comedy remained #1 throughout the majority of August. It closed late October at #25.

It is due to be released on DVD December 12th.

(3) Cars

Cars, distributed by Buena Vista, was released June 9th. The animated film featured many celebrity voices such as Larry the Cable Guy, Bonnie Hunt, Michael Keaton, Owen Wilson, and Paul Newman. Owen Wilson’s main character got into some trouble and became stuck in a small town, almost missing his famous race. He ends up learning a valuable lesson and helps the sleepy town regain its “life” and vigor. For the year 2006, it ranks second in total box office gross. The income and success comes almost equally between US and foreign theaters. It was ranked in the top 5 until mid-July.

(4) The Da Vinci Code

Many people worldwide waited in anticipation for The Da Vince Code to be released in May. The Columbia Pictures thriller starred Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautau. Surprisingly, the majority of this movie’s gross, 71% to be exact, came from foreign theaters.

(5) Click

Click is one of Adam Sandler’s better movies, in my opinion. The fantasy comedy features Sandler as a work-a-holic takes possession of a magical remote that allows him control over his life. Click opened at #1 and made $40 million in its first week alone. It is now available on DVD.
