Athens, Georgia, the largest city in northeastern Georgia, is on the Antebellum Trail. The historic trail is is string of towns, about 100 miles long, that has mansions and buildings that date back to before the Civil War. Most of the graceful mansions of the old south were destroyed

 during the war between the states, but the towns on the trail were fortunate to keep many Greek Revival and Federal style buildings from the pre war era.

The Antebellum Trail is east of Atlanta. Cities on the historic trail include Athens, Augusta, Crawfordville, Eatonton, Madison, Milledgeville and Washington.

Athens, chartered in 1806, was named after the ancient Greek center of higher learning. The southern city boasts 15 neighborhoods and 35 other sits on the on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can stroll the streets and envision the city as it would have been in the days of "Gone With the Wind," with southern belles and gentlemen.

Visitors can take organized tours or go on their own to see the historic buildings of Athens. The staff at the Athens Welcome Center can graciously provide maps and suggestions for a self guided tour of the historic sites.
