This adorable pink and black polka dot lampshade looks adorable when placed on a solid black lamp base, and is perfect for dorm rooms or teenage bedrooms!

For this project, you will need:

- One paper lampshade, the size to fit your lamp

- Black fabric

- Bright pink fabric

- Scissors designed specifically for cloth

- Scissors for paper

- Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Watermelon

- Small round drinking glass

- Pencil

- Cardstock

- Double sided masking tape

- Spray adhesive

- Popsicle stick

- Ruler

- Newspaper or a large drop cloth

The first (and most important) step in creating this pink and black polka dot lampshade is choosing a workspace that is well ventilated. For easy cleanup, cover this area with an adequate amount of newspaper or a large drop cloth.

Place the paper lampshade flat on your work area. Apply one to three thick coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Watermelon. Dry fifteen to twenty minutes between coats. Allow the lampshade to dry overnight.

Using the ruler and pencil, measure and mark two strips of bright pink cloth. One should be one inch wide and long enough to fit horizontally around the top edge of the lampshade. The second should be one inch wide and fit horizontally around the bottom edge of the lampshade. Cut out each strip of bright pink cloth with fabric scissors and et aside.

Place the cardstock flat on your work area. Set the small round drinking glass upside down on the paper. Trace the outside with a pencil, leaving a circle shape on the cardstock. Use paper scissors to cutout the circle shape. Apply a small amount of double sided masking tape to the underside of the cardstock circle. Adhere the circle to the black cloth and trace the circle shape onto the cloth in pencil. Repeat the process with as many black "polka dots" as you wish to have on the lampshade. Cut out each of the circles with fabric scissors.

Spray a bit of adhesive onto the back of each circle. Adhere to the painted lampshade in a "polka dot" fashion. Smooth a popsicle stick over each circle to prevent any wrinkling. Dry completely.

Takeaways
  • The most important step in this project is choosing a work area that is well ventilated.
  • Use only scissors that are designed for fabric. It will give off a "crisper" and "cleaner" look.
  • This lampshade looks adorable when placed on a solid black lamp base, and is perfect for dorm rooms.
