When people think of acne, they often think of teenagers with raging hormones and splotchy skin, but teenagers aren't the only ones who get acne. Up to 20% of adults also get acne and it's more common in women than in men.

Acne occurs when hair follicles get plugged with excess oil and dead cells. This is not necessarily the result of poor personal hygiene. Natural hormonal shifts can cause the body to create more oil, which increases the chances of getting adult acne. Certain medications such as steroids and oral contraceptives can react with the body and cause the skin to break out. Chronic pressure from straps or even from consistently resting your chin on your hand can cause hair follicles and pores to become blocked and infected. Other causes include stress and poor diet.

If you suspect the problem is due to medication or fluctuating hormones, you may need to see your doctor. However, you may be able to clear up your skin by maintaining a few simple habits.

Contrary to popular belief, foods high in refined sugars and saturated fats do not directly cause acne. The problem with these foods is that they often do not contain the proper nutrients to maintain a healthy body and healthy skin. Vitamin A, vitamin E, and zinc help reduce the effects of acne. When possible, vitamins and minerals are best obtained through diet so the body may properly process them. When vitamins and minerals are eaten rather than applied topically, more than just the skin is affected. The overall health of the body also improves. Also, drinking at least 64 ounces of water each day can help rid the body of environmental and dietary toxins and can result in improved health of both the skin and the body.

Stress can cause acne by increasing hormone production. Relieve tension by engaging in activities that help blow off steam. Running is a good example, as are team sports. Interacting with others in a playful and competitive manner can release the aggressions that build up throughout the day.
