Keeping African Dwarf Frogs as Pets

African Dwarf Frogs (Hymenochirus curtipes), are endearing little frogs, that while air-breathing, are fully aquatic (meaning they never need to leave the water). In recent years, they have become quite popular as aquarium pets. They are fairly easy to care for and are great fun to watch
swim around your aquarium. No need to walk these guys, and they don't leave hair all over your house,

In order to keep African dwarf frogs as pets, you will need an aquarium with a lid. Remember, these are frogs and even though they don't need to leave the water, they can sometimes jump. Keep no more than one frog per gallon of water to provide enough space for the frogs to not be over-crowded. A shallow aquarium, no deeper than three feet, is a good choice. Anything deeper may be too much of a challenge for the frogs to surface for air. These frogs also need an aquarium with limited water surface turbulence. Too much turbulence can also make it difficult for dwarf frogs to get to the surface and breathe.

African dwarf frogs can be kept with other aquarium fish, but choosing very non-aggressive tropical community fish is necessary. Guppies, tetras, and Betas are all good choices. Dwarf frogs can be very tempting to more aggressive fish as they dart to the surface for air.

Native to sub-Saharan Africa, African dwarf frogs need a subtropical environment. Keeping the water temperature above 70 degrees Fahrenheit will help keep these frogs healthy and happy. In the winter months a good aquarium heater may be necessary to keep the water at a comfortable temperature.

Lots of plants and hiding places will make African dwarf frogs feel more secure and protected. Any species of water plant will do. Artificial plastic plants are not a good choice since the hard and sometimes sharp edges can damage delicate frog bodies.
