For the very first year, the annual Fiesta Bowl competition will no longer be held in Tempe at ASU’s Sun Devil Stadium. Instead, the brand spanking new University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, with all its bells and whistles, will be the site of this year’s college team match up between BoiseState and Oklahoma, as it will be for all future years. A week later Glendale will also host the first ever BCS Championship game between OhioState and Florida.

The new stadium is great - a magnificence of technology and modern architecture. Unfortunately, for out of state fans, finding a place to stay close to the stadium will be much more difficult this year. Planned hotels did not get built in time to accommodate the influx of fans in January and unlike Sun Devil Stadium off Mill Avenue in Tempe, there are no inns within walking distance to the venue in Glendale. Another kink in the works will be that the famous “Block Party” on New Year’s Eve will still take place in downtown Tempe, many miles away from the Fiesta Bowl site.

If you want to attend this year’s Block Party, be sure you have some good directions on hand. Everything will be spread out, adding to the lack of available hotels close to the arena and requiring you to drive some distance to get anywhere you want to go. Visitors used to staying in Tempe and walking around the area to patronize shops, bars and restaurants will be in for a rude awakening when they realize how far they will have to travel to partake of any amenities. Make sure you have a good map of the Phoenix valley and lots of patience on hand to deal with the extensive traffic.

Well, Zane, at least we don't have to call it the "Pink Taco" Stadium (remember that controversy?)!!

Just a note on University of Phoenix Stadium. It is an aweful name, but that place really is quite nice. I recently saw the Rolling Stones there. It is way too big for rock concerts, but it was definitely built for football games.

Terrific, well thought out and needed coverage of a popular event. I'm impressed.
