In 1889, a newspaperman in St. Joseph, Missouri by the name of Chris L. Rutt began working on his self-rising pancake mix. Chris and two associates developed the first pancake mix ever made within a year. Chris came up with the name Aunt Jemima from a folk song he had heard at the time. He was unable to promote his Aunt Jemima pancake mix due to lack of funds, so he sold his company to R. T. Davis Mill and Manufacturing Company. The company promoted the new product at the Worlds Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. The face of Aunt Jemima was taken by a woman of the name of Nancy Green. She was a famous cook born in Montgomery County, Kentucky, and she had been hired to play the face of Aunt Jemima at demonstrations. By the time the fair had closed, she had server over one million pancakes, which had made buyers decide to place orders for over fifty thousands cases of Aunt Jemima pancake mix. For thirty years, she continued to play the role and in 1924, the company was bought by the Quaker Oats Company.Almost everyone knows the common use for pancake syrup, but how many people use it for anything else?
