Burn After Reading Kicks Off Venice Film Festival with George Clooney, Brad Pitt
The fall movie season, where all the usual Oscar-bait suspects premiere nowadays, is just about to begin. The season usually starts with prestige film festivals like the Venice film festival and the Toronto film festival. The Venice film festival begins on Wednesday with the presence of
megastars George Clooney and Brad Pitt, as well as the newest film from last year's big Oscar winners. Burn After Reading, the newest Clooney/Pitt/Coen Brothers spy comedy, opens the Venice film festival out of competition today before opening in America on September 12, according to Reuters.
Pitt arrives in Venice just several weeks after the birth of his newest babies, while Clooney is promoting his third film with the famed Coen Brothers- who call their films with Clooney a "trilogy of idiots." Burn After Reading is the Coens first film since last year's bleak, brutal Best Picture winner No Country for Old Men. But instead of more "woe is humanity" grandstanding, the Coens return to their traditional light, goofy black comic style with Burn After Reading.
In Burn After Reading, Pitt and Frances McDormand play two goofball personal fitness trainers who stumble onto a secret disk filled with the secret memoirs of ex-CIA man John Malkovich. Pitt's efforts to get blackmail money for his discovery fail miserably- and probably comically. Clooney appears as a twitchy, bearded federal marshal whose affair with Malkovich's wife, played by Clooney's Michael Clayton nemesis Tilda Swinton, brings him into the hunt for the disk. J.K Simmons and Richard Jenkins also have supporting parts.
Clooney and Pitt co-star in their fourth film together after the Oceans movies, though it is not known if they actually share any scenes in Burn After Reading. Frances McDormand is directed by her husband Joel Coen, who directed her to her 1996 Oscar for Fargo. Aside from Swinton co-starring in her second film with Clooney, she also co-stars with Pitt in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button this December.
