Teaching 2 year olds can be fun and challenging at the same time. Before you embark on this journey there are a few things you should remember.

1. All young children thrive on routines. Sunday School time should be no different. Decide the order your class activities will happen each week and stick to it. The kids will quickly learn what to expect and will begin participating accordingly.

2. Two year olds do not have much of an attention span so you should begin each class with an activity. They will loose interest if you dive right in to the lesson. One lesson I turned the table in to a tent. When the kids arrived they all ran and hid in the tent. After they were all under the table, I placed bowls of crackers all around the outside of the tent and told the children there were Israelites. I told them that when they woke up each morning they could look outside and they would find that God had provided them with manna (food) for the day. Any activity that gets the kids attention right off the bat is a perfect way to start your class.

3. Using objects helps the children visualize what you are saying. It helps tremendously with the younger kids to grasp the lesson you are trying to teach. I would never think of doing a lesson without objects.

4. Call the lesson time story time. Place a mat on the floor for each child and read them (or tell them) the story preferably holding up pictures as you go along. Most children will sit quietly for a short story. Keep the story between 10-15 minutes including question time.

5. Sing a few songs. Adding motions to the songs makes it fun for the kids. It will also help them remember the songs. Try to tie your songs in to the lesson. If you’re learning about Abraham sing “Father Abraham”, and if your learning about Jesus sing “Jesus Loves Me”.

6. Always try to prepare a craft the kids can assemble and take home to their parents. They will be proud of the work they accomplished and will be able to show their parents what they learned in class even if they are not that verbal yet.

Takeaways
  • *Use pictures with your story
  • *Start off class with an activity
  • *Allow for some free play time at the end
