I'm one of those people who will pay extra for a product at a store where I know I will receive good customer service and I'm lucky that most of the time I can afford to make that choice. There are times, however, that because of finances, I and others, are forced to find the cheapest or best value for the product we want to purchase and not for the service received.

There is a small gas station not far from where I live where the gas prices are regularly a few cents more than the price at the corner convenience store and where the items inside the little store are also more expensive too. Yet, even though several new convenience stores have popped up around this store, all providing much cheaper items and gas, this little gas station store is still thriving.

Why?

Exceptional customer service, that's why.

When you go to this little store, the owner himself will greet you at your car. He or one of his employees will pump your gas for you, check the air pressure in your tires, check your oil and fluid levels, and wash the front and back windows of your car, all at no extra cost. If you want to enter the store you can, but you can also ask the clerk or the owner who pumps your gas to bring you back whatever you want and they will bring it to you, take your money and bring you your change, all why the gas is being pumped. You don't even have to get out of your car!

I don't go to this store because I'm lazy and don't want to get out of my car, though. I don't go to this store because I can't pump my own gas or buy my own products. No, I go to this store because the people who work there treat me and their other customers as valued customers, important, dare I say, even special. I like feeling as though I matter as a customer. I like the personal touch that this store offers, and for all those reasons, I don't mind paying a few cents more to be treated with dignity, respect, courtesy.

I enjoyed reading your article. We lost our last gas station in town, the mom and pop type where they pumped the gas and check the fluids, and clean your windshield. They also offered the cheaper gas in town! Unfortunately, the owner passed away and the children were forced to close the station and put it up for sale. (It has to do with environmental law in Michigan, where service stations and the surrounding ground areas have to be "cleaned" before the deed is changed. Your article brought back many happy memories and visits back at that particular Marathon station in Saint Ignace! Very nicely written...

You're lucky to have found a place that's full service. I used to work at a full service gas station and they charged almost a dollar more a gallon for the full service. I would wash windows, check/fill oil, etc. I didn't mind the customers there, because tended to be very nice customers. However, you have to remember that with the bigger chains they have some weird ways of doing things. I'd complain more about their policies and their 'oughts' and 'oughtn'ts.' However, I'd also appreciate the cashier's honesty, but when do people appreciate that anymore?

"I like feeling as though I matter as a customer", Michelle L Devon It's wonderful to hear a few people still have scruples. I believe it is 'we' the customer that drives poor customer service. As long as we continue to frequent these places because they are a little cheaper this trend will continue. Make a stand, shop where you are appreciated. It DOES feel good and you 'the customer' deserves that - it's your money (buy what you like). Thanks Michelle

I remember gas stations like your favorite one from when I was a little girl -- and I've seen a couple driving through the South over the last few years. If I could find one like that in my area, you better believe I'd go to it. I always forget to check all those things, and having good tire pressure can save you more in gas than those extra few cents on the gallon you save at the other places. Besides which, people who work at these little mom & pops also get the best job training in the world -- I always support that.

I often wonder what has happened to customer service myself, and I think it's a respect issue too. There are employees that are hard working and give out good customer service no matter what-- I've seen them and was one of them for many years. But unfortunately, there's too few of them. Retail is tough and the hours are long, but so is any other job. I think the screening of employees needs to change from the upper management all the way on down the chain, and people should be hired for their good customer service skills. Unfortunately, management (at least the ones I worked with) took the approach that they need a "body" to fill a position and never seemed to look beyond that. The management always thought pay was an issue. I know different because it's not the pay that makes the good employee-- it's the drive and passion they have. If it were the pay-- I wouldn't have done it for 18 years of my life. You do it because you like people and you need to pay your bills-- you know?

Excellent. Why people who work for big coorporations have to be jerks has always confused me. Back in GA, most people aren't like that. And i they are, they are not the norm. Customer service is so underrated these days.

Excellent article! I think finding smiles and friendly Customer Service & staff most anywhere is a "thing of the past".

does anyone ever email/call the district manager and give him or her a head's up, you have [whatever size] problems at River City?

Thank you for sharing this experience with us and your other experiences with customer service. Customer service is very important to a business, yet it seems that it has lost value of the years. It would be nice if things were like they used to be.

Was using a debit card that only had 20 dollars on it. Pay at the pump authorizes the card for 35. If there's not 35 bucks on the card, it won't authorize, even though the card is good.

I don't know why you couldn't just pay with your card at the pump. Most of our gas stations are pre-pay but you can just do it with your card at the pump. Once the card is authorized, you can get as much gas as you want. That's really weird what happened to you. I wouldn't go to that gas station again.

Awww, you handled this situation much better than I would have. Another great article Michelle. Five stars.

I make it a point to conduct business with the ma and pops if they're similar to the station mentioned in the article. Not cause I'm lazy, but because I think it's important to support that business ethic, which is getting harder to find every day. On the other hand, unlike you Michelle, when I'm treated poorly by anyone I am giving my money to, I make it my mission to let the corporate office know about how much money will not be spent in their stores. It's just a matter of good old fashioned respect for the people paying your bills.

We had a gas station/grocery store that we always went to because we knew the owner and he was nice to everyone!! However, two major gas stations were put in right down the road, and even though some continued to stick with the old he eventually had to shut down!!
