Is False Memory a Real Disorder or Made Up to Discredit Sexual Abuse Memories?

Pamela Freyd is a middle aged mother and psychiatrist. She and her husband, Peter started the False Memory Syndrome Foundation back in the 80's. Ironically they wanted their daughter to be a part of the foundation not long before she came out with allegations of sexual abuse. Was this a coincidence? Why did she not want to be a part of this recently contrived disorder? I am suspicious that they knew she entered therapy, and they were afraid that in her therapy she may uncover the reasons for her depression and other emotional ailments.

It was no coincidence that they wanted her to be on the board. They knew that she was seeking help from a psychiatrist, and I believe feared that she would come out with accusations. She did come out with memories of sexual abuse. She must be a very brave lady to have stood up to her parents who of course denied her accusations. Many poor pathetic elderly parents from all over the world have reached out for help from this contrived False Memory Syndrome Foundation.

I do not say that there is no such thing as a therapist being able to convince a patient that there may be abuse when there isn't, but I think it is pretty rare. I think that most parents accused are guilty. I don't think that most adult children or young children want to alienate their parents. Most children want love, security and respect from their parents, not to lose their parents and families. I don't think that they want to be accused of being crazy either. Or having friends and other family memories choose sides or criticize and blame them when they are in a fragile emotional and mental state.

How anyone can say that memories cannot be repressed must not know much about war veterans. Where do they think the term "shell shocked" came from? The new name is now referred to as Post Traumatic Stress. How many people know someone who experienced horrific events in war that they repressed, later to dive under desks or tables because of memories of gunfire? How many know someone who has hideous nightmares and flashbacks? I do. Yet Freyd claims that there is no such thing.

False memories are actually common. This was a big thing in the 90's- uncovering memories of sexual abuse. Unless you are a person who has been through the process of being convinced you were abused, you can't understand how easily it happens. A teen in a mental hospital is told repeatedly that she had been sexually abused. When she denied it, she was told she was in denial and had forgotten the memories. The staff (psychiatrists, therapists, ect.) said the symtoms the teen was displaying had no other cause. There was no other explanation. The teen, after a couple visits to the menal ward began to have dreams (memories) of events that could not possibly have happened. The damage done to the teen and her family was horrible. This case is not isolated. I know of several people who went through this.

A very good article on a very serious and more common that thought problem.

Dear Sierra, I am sorry that your father tried to make you relate all the gorey details that is awful for you. I believe that it is possible for false memories, but more likely they are real, and those that started this so called false memory disorder syndrome had a lot to cover up. Thanks for your response.

False memories are possible. Thanks for an interesting article.

You make some good points in this article. I have my BA in Psychology and one of the areas I studied was the creation of false memories. It can be done, pretty easily, especially for children. But I believe therapists are being better trained to not ask leading questions recently. I actually knew someone who had created a false memory of rape and it is hard for me to imagine how one could imagine such a thing. I do think false memories are pretty rare. And you're right about how people view people in different sittuations. I was sexually assaulted by a close family friend and when I came out with it, my father automatically denied it. I was expected to drone out every gory detail. If I refused, which I did, he wouldn't and didn't believe it happened. It is painful enough to recall painful memories of sexual abuse, let alone have them be denied by those who are supposed to be supportive of you.

Thank you for all your input. Yes I do believe there can be false memory implanted, but these people that started the foundation I do not believe that their daughter was suffering from false memory, in this case, it was the perpetrators playing victim. I am glad that the family member that molested your daughter got his ass put in jail, that so rarely happens like it should

In my family everyone knew that certain people had been molested by certain other people, but no one spoke about it. It was a secret. It happened in the past, so they just let it go. But when my daughter got groped by a family member I didn't dare keep it a secret. I turned the guy in and he's in prison right now. It takes people to break the cycle of silence to make things better. As for the disorder... hypnotic suggestions have been around for who knows how long, making people cluck like chickens or whatever. Then you have those who remember past lives through hypnosis. The question becomes "how real is real" when you are under. I believe you can create false mempries if you aren't careful to let the patient remember by her/himself. This does happen, and because of that it's harder to seperate out the real cases from the false ones.

I agree with your thoughts here. My Step Daughter started acting out when she was 12 and I had only been her Step Dad for less than 6 months. They tryed to blame her biological Father but no memeory. But boy did they try hard. When she didn't remember anything they looked at me. What a bad feeling that they would even think this is possible. I turns outit was her Father leaving her Mother for a youger woman and also some bad friends at school. I just don't trust these Psyhco-anythings, a bunch of witch doctors.

It is even odder that they started it before their daughter came out with it, when they knew she entered therapy, h haaa , if interested read some of what is written on interview with Pamela Freyd. Also the Dr. that resigned from the False Memory syndrome. very intersting. thanks for your comments
