Get Paid to Scan Grocery Barcodes from Your Home: A Real Job or a Scam?

Suddenly there’s a whole new wave of online jobs that claim to pay you for simply “scanning your groceries”. But how does it work? How much do you get paid? Is this even legit? That’s what I wanted to know too.
The first advertisement I came across was this one:

Get Paid to Scan Your Groceries! Shoppers Hotline Elite - get paid to scan your groceries If you would like an application call 1-800-528- 7383.
 http://join.shoppershotline.com/default2.html

I first tried to use the link that was provided in this job posting but it was invalid so I then called the company. After being placed on hold for about 15 minutes, I was able to speak with a gentleman named David.

I inquired information about this job posting and right away he said, “Well I’ll just send you an application. Let me get your information.”

I interjected that I have absolutely no knowledge about what this job is and I will need him to explain more so I can make a decision whether or not I’d even like an application.

This is the information I gathered from David:

Shoppers Hotline is a company that gathers information through the use of at-home barcode scanning. Basically, you’re supposed to scan everything you purchase using the “free” scanner they will send you. And by “everything”, I mean literally, “everything”. Scan your food purchases, appliances, clothing tags, you name it.

Once a week you use the information you have gathered through your scanner and submit it to Shoppers Hotline using your phone like or internet connection.

Shoppers Hotline then gives this information to companies that will send you coupons for your regular purchases. In addition, you get cash rewards and you can win prizes through sweepstakes and drawings.

Related information
  • Scanner is not really "free"
  • Pay is incredibly low
  • You MUST pay a membership fee to participate!

I have been a member of shopper's hotline for 11 years! I have never paid one penny to them. And, I do not remember to scan every week. I will be really good for a while and then I may skip 3 or 4 weeks. Once in a while if I do, they may call me to see if my scanner is working or if I've just forgotten. I even won a sweepstakes with a $1000 prize and $250 in gift cards. I'm suspect of everyone, but this one's worked out for me.

I am a member of shopper's hotline and I have never paid a cent for anything, I have gotten paid several times for scanning. It is simple and I earn extra dollars for doing almost no work.

OH yes, I have never been asked for one cent for this program!

I too, think Tori shouldn't have jumped the gun and jumped to conclusions on this. I just got my scanner, but may send it back unused, as it isn't like the program I used to be in. And it isn't supposed to be a "job". Its a market research tool for the products you buy. The other company I did this for had quite an extensive catalog. I scanned when I could remember to, but after years on that program, I just became bored with it, and sent everything back to them. NOW, I can't find them anymore... It looks totally easy to me to operate...this Shoppers Hotline scanner. And the instructions are easy. So, people, please don't believe everything you hear or read. Check things out for yourself. I agree Keith...maybe we are too computer literate and techno lovers...? I enjoy doing everything dealing with computers, phone lines, technology. I am sort of an oddity, at the age of 71, LOL.

I just received info on this company in the mail today. I appreciated your review and the comments it has generated. It has provided me with more information than I have been able to find on their website.

I have been participating for awhile, butI am now on the second time around of mailing back the scanner and base. I got 2 batteries sent to me , and the communication is VERY POOR. all they are doing is sounding liek they read off of cue cards. I tell them everything I have done, and then they tell me "remove the batery, etc" everything I just told them. the service people don't know how to think out side the box. And I wonder are they in the USA, everyone have spoken with has an accent that would place them in Indai, Pakistan, etc. that region of the world. I have had bad service other places, but this takes the cake, cause they all repeat the same thing, even the "manager" !

A lot has changed over the years. Great company to make a difference and to make a few dollars at the same time

I am a willing participant, or trying to be, in this program. Following the scanner directions for set up with a DSL line was a challenge, but things seemed to work and I was scanning items for several weeks when I recvd a postcard indicating they haven't gotten any transmission and I needed to send all equipment back! I have had MULTIPLE conversations with the VERY difficult to understand contacts at the help line, and they tell me the same thing each time, which obviously isn't working. The website only offers the option of viewing the newsletter under the support tab. I am ready to send the entire thing back at this point!! And I really liked the idea of participating for the shoppers voice side of things, to...

First of all, I am currently a member of the shopper's hotline and EVERYTHING is FREE! I have not paid for anything. You don't have to pay for the scanner, but when you decided not to be a member anymore, you do have to return it. Second, it is very easy to use. Everything you do is on the scanner. You pick the category, you pick the store, and then you start scanning in your items like the stores do. Then you total it and press send. That's it! It's easier than using most cell phones. And yes, you don't make much for it, but it's not supposed to be a full time career. It a way to get some extra cash. Even the small amount can add up. It takes me a minute extra of my time every week.

Things like this always sound like a scam. I got something in the mail, but I was wary. It sounded too good to be true. What really hit me, though, was that you have to do it every week or you will be taken off! So I read up on it (that's why I'm here), and I found this: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Discuss:Is_Shoppers%27_Hotline_a_reputable_company People being scammed! I wouldn't trust them. They're tricky in their language, so people need to watch out. They say in the letter I received, "Joining is easy and participation is free." So, becoming a member may not be free, but actually participating (once you've paid to be a member) IS free. Tricky, tricky. Just like when people say "free download"--they mean you don't have to pay to do the downloading itself, but you need to pay for what you're downloading. Using language like this usually means the company (or person) has something to hide. Watch out!
