Cabinet Stalemate in Kenya
Civil Society Asserts Pressure
By Anne P, published Apr 03, 2008Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai speaks after police lobed tear gas canisters to disperse members of the civil society. They were protesting against the formation of a bloated cabinet which they say will force tax payers to cough more money to maintain it. The government in a power sharing agreement with the Orange Democratic Movement are meant to share cabinet posts on a 50-50 basis. The government has proposed a cabinet of 44 while the ODM wants a much leaner outfit of 34.
