Since it was first introduced by Dr. James Naismith in 1891, baskeball was a very popular sport, probably because it was a new, unique sport. The NBA became the most popular basketball league because of talented players like Larry Bird and Michael Jordan.

The sport of basketball was created by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts. His motivation for creating the sport was to keep his physical education students occupied during the long, cold New England winter.
