mbine%20this%20with%20the%20idea%20that%20many%20types%20of%20food%2C%20some%20previously%20forbidden%20to%20certain%20students%2C%20is%20now%20available%20in%20unlimited%20quantities%20and%20it%20is%20easy%20to%20see%20the%20possibly%20correlations%20between%20college%20and%20weight%20gain%20%28Svec%2C%202005%29.%3Cp%3EIt%20is%20also%20very%20important%20to%20remember%20the%20role%20that%20food%20can%20take%20in%20college%20social%20interaction.%20Writer%20Veena%20Thomas%20describes%20the%20scene%20as%20college%20students%20were%20in%20a%20line%20for%20food%3A%20%22I%20started%20contemplating%20this%20after%20attending%20the%20recent%20Class%20of%202002%20Ring%20Delivery.%20Following%20a%20reception%20%28with%20food%29%20at%20Killian%20Court%2C%20sophomores%20were%20bused%20to%20the%20harbor.%20Immediately%20after%20boarding%20the%20cruise%20ship%2C%20students%20found%20themselves%20in%20a%20huge%20crowd%20vaguely%20resembling%20a%20line.%20Apparently%20more%20free%20food%20lay%20ahead.%20There%2C%20all%20hell%20broke%20loose.%20Picture%20800%20students%20forming%20a%20mob%20in%20order%20to%20get%20to%20two%20tables%20of%20various%20desserts.%20The%20scene%20resembled%20a%20mosh%20pit.%20Any%20sense%20of%20order%2C%20which%20might%20have%20been%20present%20initially%2C%20was%20soon%20lost%20as%20everyone%20swarmed%20around%20the%20tables.%20Pushing%20and%20shoving%20ensued%20in%20a%20battle%20to%20reach%20the%20food%20faster.%20Some%20people%20walked%20off%20with%20plates%20loaded%20with%20goodies%2C%20as%20others%20received%20none.%20Those%20in%20the%20back%20of%20the%20crowd%20couldn%27t%20reach%20the%20tables%3B%20those%20who%20had%20taken%20their%20share%20of%20food%20couldn%27t%20find%20room%20to%20leave%20the%20area%20amidst%20the%20mob%20scene.%20People%20began%20passing%20trays%20of%20food%20from%20the%20tables%20to%20the%20back%20of%20the%20crowd%20in%20order%20to%20satisfy%20them%2C%20but%20this%20soon%20ceased%20as%20the%20trays%20broke%20with%20so%20many%20grabbing%20for%20them.%20It%20was%20one%20of%20the%20most%20greedy%2C%20primitive%20displays%20I%27ve%20ever%20seen%22%20%282000%29.%3Cp%3EIt%20is%20often%20thought%20that%20college%20in%20general%20can%20contribute%20to%20a%20condition%20known%20as%20%22compulsive%20overeating%22%20%28Renfrew%2C%202002%29.%20Food%20in%20college%20can%20often%20provide%20an%20opportunity%20for%20social%20interaction%20or%20bonding.%20Meal%20time%20for%20many%20students%20is%20a%20crucial%20point%20for%20social%20interaction%2C%20and%20this%20can%20also%20lead%20to%20dangerous%20amounts%20of%20overeating%2C%20with%20some%20students%20spending%20more%20than%20an%20hour%20in%20cafeterias%2C%20leading%20to%20much%20larger%20amounts%20of%20food%20being%20consumed%20than%20would%20normally%20be%20thought%20of%20%28Svec%202005%29.%20All%20of%20these%20conditions%20are%20great%20risk%20factors%20for%20the%20development%20of%20compulsive%20eating%20disorder.%20%22Compulsive%20overeating%20can%20affect%20women%20or%20men%2C%20though%20it%20appears%20twice%20as%20often%20among%20women.%20People%20with%20compulsive%20overeating%20disorder%20suffer%20from%20episodes%20of%20uncontrolled%20eating%20or%20bingeing%20followed%20by%20periods%20of%20guilt%20and%20depression%22%20%28Renfrew%2C%202002%29.%3Cp%3EIt%20is%20very%20important%20to%20remember%20that%20college%20can%20create%20some%20of%20the%20main%20factors%20for%20developing%20compulsive%20eating%20disorder.%20The%20disorder%20can%20often%20come%20as%20a%20result%20of%20feeling%20depressed%2C%20alienated%20or%20feeling%20as%20though%20something%20is%20missing%20in%20ones%20life%20%28Compulsive%20Eating%20Disorder%29.%20It%20is%20worth%20noting%20that%20many%20first%20time%20college%20students%20experience%20many%20feelings%20such%20as%20this%20during%20their%20first%20weeks%20and%20months%20away%20from%20home.%20%22Many%20people%20eat%20when%20they%20are%20under%20stress%20and%20freshman%20year%20can%20be%20a%20particularly%20stressful%20time.%20Simply%20changing%20from%20one%20environment%20to%20another%20can%20be%20difficult%20and%20the%20college%20environment%20usually%20is%20quite%20different%20from%20high%20school%22%20%28Svec%2C%202005%29.%3Cp%3EIn%20fact%2C%20the%20Freshman%20Fifteen%20has%20become%20so%20dangerous%20to%20the%20health%20of%20students%20that%20many%20colleges%20and%20websites%20attempt%20to%20offer%20ways%20for%20students%20to%20beat%20the%20weight%20gain%2C%20including%20many%20tips%20for%20healthy%20eating.%20Surely%2C%20the%20prevalence%20of%20the%20problem%20is%20made%20very%20clear%20by%20the%20fact%20that%20colleges%20attempt%20to%20fight%20it.%20%22Though%20it%20is%20part%20myth%2C%20many%20schools%20recognize%20it%20by%20name%20and%20may%20take%20the%20opportunity%20to%20put%20up%20posters%20or%20hold%20seminars%20on%20basic%20nutrition%20with%20tips%20on%20how%20to%20avoid%20the%20weight%20gain%22%20%28Freshman%20fifteen%29.%20%22Saint%20Mary%27s%20encourages%20students%20to%20take%20ad 20exist%20when%20studying%20the%20phenomenon%2C%20perhaps%20one%20of%20the%20key%20factors%20thought%20to%20actually%20cause%20the%20Freshman%20Fifteen%20would%20be%20the%20easiest%20to%20study.%20The%20fact%20that%20many%20students%20put%20on%20the%20supposed%20fifteen%20pounds%20is%20thought%20to%20be%20induced%20at%20least%20in%20part%20by%20the%20increased%20amount%20of%20junk%20food%20that%20many%20students%20take%20in%20during%20times%20of%20high%20stress%2C%20such%20as%20finals%20or%20midterms.%20It%20is%20a%20common%20thought%20that%20students%20in%20college%20put%20in%20many%20longer%20night%20hours%20than%20do%20students%20in%20high%20school.%20As%20a%20result%20of%20the%20increased%20time%20spent%20working%20and%20studying%20at%20night%2C%20many%20have%20suggested%20that%20students%20consume%20a%20much%20higher%20amount%20of%20junk%20food%20or%20snacks%2C%20such%20as%20chips%20or%20other%20high%20fat%20foods.%20While%20this%20is%20a%20somewhat%20difficult%20thing%20to%20empirically%20test%2C%20an%20ideal%20experiment%20would%20study%20the%20levels%20of%20food%20that%20students%20intake%20during%20certain%20times%20of%20the%20year%20that%20relate%20to%20high%20stress.%3Cbr%3E%20%20%20%20However%2C%20the%20first%20part%20of%20empirically%20studying%20the%20Freshman%20Fifteen%20would%20be%20to%20send%20out%20a%20survey%20that%20asks%20students%20if%20they%20experienced%20this%20during%20their%20first%20year.%20Although%20there%20would%20be%20certain%20problems%20with%20a%20survey.%20It%20would%20still%20serve%20as%20a%20decent%20background%20for%20studying%20the%20myth.%20In%20order%20to%20properly%20send%20out%20the%20survey%2C%20it%20would%20be%20delivered%20to%20second%2C%20third%20and%20fourth%20year%20students.%20It%20would%20include%20questions%20relating%20to%20most%20health%20aspects%2C%20such%20as%20any%20time%20spent%20exercising%2C%20whether%20or%20not%20the%20student%20is%20a%20member%20of%20any%20athletic%20teams%20or%20participates%20in%20a%20large%20amount%20of%20activities.%20Other%20information%20would%20ask%20students%20about%20their%20eating%20habits%20both%20during%20their%20first%20year%20of%20college%20and%20in%20relation%20to%20what%20they%20ate%20before%20they%20began%20attending.%20The%20survey%20would%20be%20sent%20out%20through%20our%20college%20mail%2C%20to%20eliminate%20the%20possibility%20that%20some%20students%20would%20not%20receive%20it%20if%20it%20were%20to%20be%20distributed%20in%20some%20other%20way%2C%20such%20as%20in%20person.%20I%20would%20personally%20keep%20track%20of%20the%20results%2C%20the%20survey%20would%20be%20either%20sent%20to%20my%20actual%20dorm%20room%2C%20or%20sent%20to%20a%20mailbox.%20Also%2C%20the%20possibility%20of%20sending%20it%20out%20through%20electronic%20mail%2C%20as%20a%20secondary%20method%20should%20the%20first%20not%20provides%20enough%20results%20are%20also%20an%20idea.%3Cp%3EAn%20important%20part%20of%20any%20survey%20though%20is%20examining%20in%20whether%20or%20not%20it%20could%20offend%20or%20somehow%20damage%20the%20intended%20study%20group.%20I%20have%20careful%20considered%20this%20though%2C%20and%20do%20not%20see%20a%20lot%20of%20potential%20danger%20with%20those%20involved.%20There%20is%20the%20possibility%20that%20it%20could%20offend%20some%20students%2C%20which%20seems%20to%20be%20a%20very%20minor%20risk.%20Very%20little%20overall%20danger%20exists%20when%20it%20comes%20to%20simple%20surveys.%20Of%20course%2C%20when%20actually%20writing%20the%20survey%2C%20I%20would%20have%20to%20be%20very%20careful%20to%20avoid%20biasing%20the%20questions%20in%20any%20way%2C%20and%20choose%20very%20specific%20wording.%20Also%2C%20the%20initial%20survey%20distributed%20would%20include%20more%20open-ended%20questions%2C%20which%20are%20far%20more%20beneficial%20when%20studying%20something%20such%20as%20the%20myth%20as%20compared%20to%20close%20ended%20or%20multiple%20choice%2C%20yes%20and%20no%20questions.%3Cbr%3E%20%20%20%20While%20the%20initial%20survey%20would%20serve%20as%20a%20great%20way%20to%20get%20some%20basic%20information%20from%20the%20student%20body%20as%20to%20how%20they%20feel%20regarding%20the%20Freshman%20Fifteen%20and%20if%20it%20has%20personally%20affected%20any%20of%20them%2C%20a%20far%20more%20interesting%20idea%20would%20be%20to%20study%20the%20actual%20causes%20behind%20it.%20In%20order%20to%20understand%20and%20complete%20this%20part%2C%20I%20have%20designed%20a%20simple%20experiment%20that%20would%20measure%20the%20amount%20of%20food%20students%20intake%20during%20certain%20times%20of%20high%20stress%20and%20low%20stress%2C%20this%20would%20enable%20the%20study%20to%20come%20to%20a%20definite%20conclusion%20about%20whether%20or%20not%20at%20least%20a%20certain%20aspect%20of%20the%20myth%20is%20true.%3Cp%3EIn%20order%20to%20perform%20this%20experiment%2C%20I%20would%20invite%20several%20freshman%20students%20to%20a%20study%20group.%20This%20would%20have%20to%20be%20done%20twice.%20Once%20during%20a%20period%20of%20low%20stress%2C%20as%20for%20a%20simple%20homework%20assignment%2C%20possibly%20that%20students%20have%20a%20lot%20of%20time%20to%20complete%2C%20this%20would%20have%20to%20vary%20based%20on%20the%20time%20that%20the%20experiment%20was%20conducted%2C%20of%20course%2C%20in%20order%20to%20accommodate%20for%20individual%20assignments.%20During%20the%20experiment%2C%20students%20at%20the%20study%20group%20would%20be%20given%20a%20selection%20of%20both%20healthy%20and%20non-healthy%20food.%20For%20example%2C%20fruit%20and%20vegetables%20would%20be%20set%20out%2C%20as%20would%20perhaps%20cookies%20and%20chips%20or%20pizza.%20As%20part%20of%20the%20study%20group%2C%20the%20amount%20of%20type%20of%20the%20foods%20students%20eat%20would%20be%20measured.%20This%20would%20have%20to%20be%20repeated%20several%20times%20with%20several%20different%20groups%20of%20students%20in%20order%20to%20get%20the%20proper%20information%20and%20avoid%20getting%20a%20sample%20bias.%20This%20would%20be%20done%20several%20times%20during%20periods%20of%20low%20stress%2C%20and%20each%20time%20the%20results%20would%20be%20measured%20in%20coordination%20to%20what%20the%20students%20are%20eating%20and%20the%20individual%20assignment%20being%20studied%20for.%3Cp%3EThe%20second%20part%20of%20the%20experiment%20would%20come%20at%20a%20time%20of%20high%20stress%20for%20most%20students.%20Ideally%2C%20this%20would%20have%20to%20be%20organized%20during%20a%20finals%20or%20midterm%20week.%20Doing%20this%20then%20would%20likely%20extend%20the%20study%20session%20slightly.%20As%20in%20the%20control%20group%2C%20once%20again%20two%20different%20groups%20of%20food%20would%20be%20set%20out%20and%20the%20results%20of%20how%20much%20food%20is%20taken%20from%20certain%20groups%20would%20be%20measured%20and%20recorded.%20%3Cp%3EAlthough%20this%20experiment%20does%20involve%20some%20slight%20damage%20to%20subjects%20perhaps%2C%20it%20would%20expose%20them%20to%20unhealthy%20food%2C%20it%20can%20be%20rationalized%20with%20the%20idea%20that%20it%20is%20nothing%20that%20millions%20of%20students%20across%20the%20country%20do%20not%20ordinarily%20participate%20in.%20Following%20the%20tests%2C%20each%20group%20would%20be%20informed%20that%20their%20eating%20habits%20were%20studied%20and%20recorded.%20Ideally%2C%20the%20results%20would%20show%20that%20students%20do%20indeed%20eat%20unhealthy%20food%20to%20begin%20with%2C%20and%20eat%20far%20more%20during%20periods%20of%20high%20stress.%3Cp%3EAlthough%20the%20experiment%20seems%20to%20be%20a%20good%20idea%2C%20there%20are%20certain%20problems%20with%20it.%20In%20each%20group%20the%20students%20will%2C%20of%20course%2C%20differ%2C%20and%20it%20may%20be%20very%20difficult%20to%20gather%20the%20exact%20same%20group%20back%20for%20each%20individual%20study.%20Also%2C%20organizing%20the%20students%20in%20the%20first%20place%20might%20prove%20somewhat%20difficult.%20Problems%20may%20also%20arise%20if%20the%20students%20do%20not%20eat%20as%20much%20as%20was%20expected%20of%20them%20in%20the%20first%20place.%20It%20is%20very%20possible%20that%20some%20of%20the%20students%20involved%20may%20have%20just%20come%20from%20a%20meal%20or%20other%20period%20of%20eating.%20If%20any%20of%20these%20did%20occur%20though%2C%20the%20experiment%20could%20be%20repeated%20on%20different%20days%20or%20different%20times%20to%20see%20if%20the%20results%20would%20change.%20Also%2C%20students%20could%20be%20interviewed%20following%20the%20experiment%20to%20see%20if%20they%20have%20any%20input%20or%20have%20any%20feelings%20about%20whether%20or%20not%20they%20themselves%20noticed%20an%20increase%20in%20eating%20during%20certain%20periods%20of%20time%20during%20the%20academic%20year.%3Cp%3EWhile%20this%20may%20seem%20to%20be%20a%20very%20simple%20experiment%2C%20the%20results%20could%20greatly%20help%20in%20various%20areas%20of%20study.%20Finding%20out%20whether%20or%20not%20the%20Freshman%20Fifteen%20does%20in%20fact%20exist%20could%20greatly%20help%20out%20with%20college%20level%20nutritionists%20as%20well%20as%20helping%20students%20to%20avoid%20the%20additional%20weight%20during%20their%20freshman%20year%20at%20college.%20Hopefully%2C%20the%20experiment%20would%20help%20us%20to%20understand%20what%20exactly%20brings%20on%20additional%20eating%20during%20college%20and%20would%20provide%20the%20necessary%20results%20to%20eventually%20overcoming%20much%20of%20the%20additional%20weight%20gain%20that%20is%20very%20possible%20during%20college.%20Also%2C%20the%20survey%20portion%20of%20the%20experiment%20would%20allow%20us%20to%20understand%20whether%20or%20not%20the%20Freshman%20Fifteen%20is%20an%20actual%20problem%20or%20just%20an%20exaggerated%20myth.%20While%20the%20Freshman%20Fifteen%20may%20seem%20like%20somewhat%20of%20a%20minor%20problem%20to%20some%2C%20it%20can%20set%20the%20stage%20for%20health%20and%20nutrition%20for%20the%20rest%20of%20student%27s%20lives.%20As%20a%20result%20of%20how%20important%20it%20can%20be%20then%2C%20it%20seems%20on
