3E-This%20can%20be%20detrimental%20to%20anyone%20because%20these%20schools%20seem%20to%20thrive%20on%20endless%20partying%20and%20socializing%20which%20can%20completely%20distract%20students%20from%20why%20they%27re%20in%20college%20and%20even%20influencing%20students%20to%20put%20their%20priorities%20on%20the%20back%20burner.%3Cp%3E%3Cstrong%3ECheck%20the%20evaluation%20of%20colleges%3C%2Fstrong%3E-You%20want%20to%20know%20if%20the%20school%20you%27re%20going%20to%20attend%20has%20a%20good%20rating%20in%20terms%20of%20rank%20because%20it%20may%20have%20a%20catchy%20sounding%20name%20when%20you%20get%20out%20of%20school%2C%20but%20doesn%27t%20necessarily%20mean%20that%20they%20are%20the%20best%20school%20since%20some%20schools%20do%20fall%20in%20ranking%20when%20they%20don%27t%20meet%20specific%20expectations%20with%20students.%3Cp%3E%3Cstrong%3EEnroll%20only%20in%20the%20classes%20you%20need%3C%2Fstrong%3E-Some%20students%20don%27t%20see%20this%20mistake%20until%20after%20the%20fact%20which%20is%20having%20poor%20advisors%20who%20don%27t%20take%20the%20time%20to%20properly%20advise%20students%20of%20classes%20that%20they%20need%20instead%20of%20taking%20whatever%20which%20could%20later%20find%20out%20that%20they%20should%20have%20not%20taken%20that%20class.%20Key%20classes%20taken%20should%20be%20courses%20that%20you%20can%20apply%20it%20towards%20you%20respective%20degree%20and%20major%20or%20professional%20certification.%3Cp%3E%3Cstrong%3EShow%20up%20to%20class%3C%2Fstrong%3E-This%20is%20the%20one%20lesson%20that%20should%20be%20taken%20seriously%20because%20for%20every%20class%20you%20miss%20you%20might%20as%20well%20miss%20an%20entire%20week.%20Students%20who%20repeatedly%20miss%20classes%20are%20in%20fact%20hurting%20their%20grade%2C%20but%20also%20their%20action%20tells%20professors%20and%20instructors%20that%20you%20are%20not%20serious%20about%20their%20classes.%3Cp%3E%3Cstrong%3ECommunication%20with%20your%20professors%3C%2Fstrong%3E-It%27s%20important%20to%20show%20them%20that%20you%20are%20serious%20about%20their%20classes%20by%20staying%20on%20top%20of%20things%20like%20asking%20them%20how%20you%27re%20doing%20and%20if%20you%27re%20not%20doing%20well%20what%20can%20you%20do%20to%20improve.%20Now%20the%20funny%20thing%20is%20that%20some%20professors%20do%20have%20issues%20with%20dealing%20with%20people%20of%20other%20ethnic%20groups%2C%20but%20they%20should%20still%20give%20that%20person%20the%20respect%20like%20everyone%20else%20and%20not%20assume%20that%20certain%20students%20by%20ethnicity%20are%20worthy%20of%20the%20better%20grades%20and%20opportunities.%3Cbr%3E%3Cstrong%3EAssociate%20yourself%20with%20peers%20on%20the%20same%20page%20as%20you%20are%3C%2Fstrong%3E-It%27s%20important%20to%20associate%20yourself%20with%20peers%20who%20are%20doing%20something%20with%20themselves%20stay%20away%20from%20those%20who%20don%27t%20go%20to%20class%20and%20who%20are%20engaging%20in%20lifestyles%20that%20will%20eventually%20get%20them%20a%20one%20way%20ticket%20out%20of%20school.%20College%20should%20be%20a%20positive%20experience%20and%20best%20shared%20with%20peers%20who%20don%27t%20spend%20their%20time%20getting%20high%20and%20drunk%20and%20actually%20take%20their%20studies%20seriously.%20%3Cp%3EIt%27s%20important%20for%20students%20to%20keep%20things%20in%20prospective%20and%20to%20understand%20why%20they%27re%20in%20college.%20I%20kind%20of%20felt%20like%20I%20didn%27t%20get%20enough%20support%20from%20my%20advisors.%20When%20I%20was%20graduating%20in%20the%20spring%20of%202001%20with%20my%20associate%27s%20degree%20the%20advisor%20tried%20to%20sideline%20me%20with%20this%20comment%20%22You%20got%20to%203%20math%20courses%20to%20graduate%20with%20your%20AGS%20%28Associate%20of%20General%20Studies%29%20and%20you%20will%20have%20to%20stay%20another%202%20years%22%20what%20this%20woman%20wasn%27t%20aware%20of%20is%20that%20students%20who%20enrolled%20at%20my%20school%20before%20Fall%202001%20were%20not%20required%20to%20take%20any%20course%20to%20graduate%20if%20you%20got%20an%20Associates%20of%20General%20Studies%20it%20was%20those%20who%20enrolled%20in%20the%20new%20school%20year%20who%20were%20required%20to%20take%20a%20math%20course%20for%20all%20degrees.%20It%20was%20then%20that%20I%20realized%20how%20this%20woman%20treated%20students%20as%20just%20a%20face%20and%20a%20number%20like%20they%20were%20in%20prison%20and%20got%20lazy%20in%20her%20job%20%28clear%20sign%20when%20people%20don%27t%20like%20their%20jobs%20their%20performance%20goes%20way%20down%29.%20She%20lacked%20the%20compassion%20and%20professionalism.%20The%20feeling%20I%20got%20as%20I%20progressed%20in%20college%20the%20way%20some%20of%20the%20professors%20behaved%20made%20you%20think%20about%20how%20they%20have%20no%20business%20being%20an%20advisor%20if%20they%20can%27t%20put%20aside%20their%20personal%20issues%20with%20people%20of%20different%20ethnic%20groups.%20The%20four%20year%20college%20I%20finished%20at%20who%27s%20name%20will%20remain%20unmentioned%20seemed%20to%20have%20this%20high%20hope%20for%20the%20white%20and%20asian%20students%20that%20attended%20because%20they%20were%20eager%20to%20kiss%20enough%20tail%20to%20move%20up%20in%20the%20world%2C%20where%20the%20black%20and%20Hispanic%20students%20fell%20on%20the%20wayside%20in%20terms%20of%20the%20fact%20that%20I%20learned%20how%20far%20some%20people%20will%20go%20for%20a%20degree%20even%20if%20it%20meant%20having%20sex%20with%20that%20professor%20to%20get%20passing%20grades%20and%20that%20your%20father%20was%20academic%20vice-president%20of%20the%20school%20you%20attended.%20It%20didn%27t%20dawn%20on%20me%20as%20an%20undergrad%20to%20move%20through%20the%20halls%20of%20higher%20learning%20knowing%20you%20got%20people%20who%20don%27t%20have%20the%20incentive%20to%20earn%20something%20the%20honest%20way%20and%20work%20for%20it.%20%3Cp%3EA%20girl%20I%20had%20several%20history%20classes%20with%20was%20a%20Political%20Science%20major%20and%20minored%20in%20history%20had%20reportedly%20engaged%20in%20a%20sexual%20relationship%20with%20the%20professor%20and%20just%20from%20listening%20to%20peers%20I%20had%20the%20class%20with%20it%20slowly%20became%20obvious%20that%20some%20people%20will%20go%20to%20great%20lengths%20to%20pass%20a%20class%20even%20if%20it%20meant%20having%20to%20exchange%20sex%20for%20a%20grade%20which%20is%20prostituting%20one%27s%20self%20out.%20I%20could%20have%20gone%20that%20route%20like%20some%20girls%2C%20but%20I%20would%20have%20rather%20earned%20my%20degree%20through%20hard%20work%20and%20dedication%20than%20to%20be%20some%20loose%20nasty%20slut%20with%20no%20values%20and%20thinking%20that%20I%20can%20get%20what%20I%20want%20just%20by%20laying%20on%20my%20back%20with%20my%20legs%20cocked%20up.%20As%20a%20woman%20I%20have%20self%20respect%20for%20myself%20and%20I%20wouldn%27t%20even%20think%20of%20having%20a%20sexual%20fling%20with%20a%20professor%20when%20there%27s%20that%20student%2Fteacher%20relationship%20that%20simply%20you%20don%27t%20cross%20that%20line.%20Just%20because%20you%27re%20consenting%20adults%20there%27s%20lines%20you%20don%27t%20cross.%20This%20professor%20who%20engaged%20in%20a%20sexual%20relationship%20with%20the%20student%20in%20question%20will%20remained%20unnamed%20for%20legal%20and%20personal%20reasons%20since%20that%27s%20not%20the%20important%20part%20of%20the%20story.%20What%20a%20student%20needs%20to%20really%20take%20into%20consideration%20is%20being%20prepared%20and%20ready%20to%20take%20on%20the%20world%20of%20college%20and%20the%20halls%20of%20higher%20learning.%20Students%20will%20arrive%20at%20college%20thinking%20like%20a%20kid%20when%20college%20is%20also%20where%20you%20learn%20how%20to%20grow%20up%20and%20act%20like%20an%20adult.%20Assuming%20responsibilities%20for%20how%20you%20function%20in%20school%20and%20everyday%20life.%20The%20problems%20that%20many%20college%20students%20face%20are%20knowing%20how%20to%20take%20care%20of%20business%20first%20and%20fun%20later.%20College%20is%20a%20full%20time%20job%20and%20if%20you%20think%20they%20just%20give%20degrees%20away%20everyone%20and%20their%20mama%20would%20be%20lining%20up%20for%20one.%20It%20took%20me%206%20years%20of%20heartache%2C%20disappointment%2C%20trials%2C%20tribulations%2C%20errors%20and%20whatever%20you%20can%20imagine%20I%20was%20there.%20June%202005%20was%20when%20I%20saw%20the%20day%20of%20all%20days%20graduation%20and%20that%27s%20probably%20the%20one%20day%20every%20college%20student%20dreams%20about.%20You%20can%27t%20get%20to%20graduation%20unless%20you%20put%20in%20some%20serious%20work%20and%20paying%20your%20dues%20and%206%20years%20was%20more%20than%20enough%20time%20paid%20for.%20If%20I%20could%20talk%20to%20anyone%20who%27s%20getting%20ready%20to%20come%20out%20of%20high%20school%20I%20would%20give%20you%20a%20preview%20that%20college%20is%20work%20and%20you%20have%20to%20be%20ready%20to%20commit%20yourself%20for%204%20years%20and%20it%20takes%20dedication%20and%20a%20commitment.%20It%27s%20not%20easy%20to%20get%20through%20college%2C%20but%20in%20the%206%20years%20I%20took%20my%20own%20journey%20down%20the%20road%20towards%20graduation%20I%20learned%20a%20lot%20of%20life%20lessons%20along%20the%20way%20from%20my%20family%20and%20peers.%20I%20learned%20that%20in%20order%20for%20me%20to%20cross%20that%20bridge%20of%20life%20I%20must%20take%20into%20consideration%20the%20work%20and%20commitment%20of%20organizing%20myself%20mentally%2C%20physically%2C%20emotionally%2C%20spiritually%2C%20and%20financially.%20College%20is%20a%20job%20and%20should%20be%20treated%20as%20such%20because%20you%20are%20responsible%20for%20your%20own%20success.%3Cbr%3E%3Cbr%3EOriginal%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.associatedcontent.com%2Farticle%2F370696%2Fthe_things_i_wished_i_had_learned_when.html%22%3Earticle%3C%2Fa%3E%20by%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.associatedcontent.com%2Fuser%2F50050%2Fnafeesah_abdullah_cna.html%22%20class%3D%22link_orange%22%3E%3
