Instead of belting out the well-known verses of The Star-Spangled Banner, Rene Marie chose to sing the lyrics to Lift Every Voice and Sing, also known as the Black National Anthem, in Denver on Tuesday.

At Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper's State of the City address, African American singer Rene Marie was scheduled to sing the National Anthem. She didn't do that, exactly. The tune was there, but the words were a little bit different.

Denver is in shock. Why? A jazz singer named Rene Marie was asked to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" as an introduction to Mayor John Hickenlooper's annual address to the city. She did... well, sort of.

It's time to celebrate our nation's independence. Do you know where the Star Spangled Banner, our national anthem, was written? It was on a ship in the waters just off of Fort McHenry in Baltimore. So why not take a step back in time and celebrate July 4th there?

Responses to my article on Rene Marie's Denver performance of The Black National Anthem have made me think about the issue in more depth. While I still believe that the venue for the message was inappropriate, the need for the message is becoming clearer.

What Our National Anthem Means to Me

This article is mainly to provide an individual with all the lyrics to our national anthem. This is not the easiest of songs to sing.

"The Star-Spangled Banner" came about as a result of the War of 1812. A Washington, D.C. lawyer wrote the poem after witnessing a siege. It was set to music and the rest is American history.

In case you missed it, September 14 was the anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner, the poem that became our national anthem.

The words are archaic and unfamiliar to most Americans, the music simply cannot be sung correctly! It's time it were dumped and replaced.

Of course any celebration of the United States should include our national anthem, "The Star Spangled Banner."

America is a great country and I am proud to be an American, are you?

Take a look at your money and you'll find the inscription "In God We Trust," on every bill and coin. Read our Constitution and you'll find mention of God throughout. We are a religious nation, and it's apparent everywhere.

It is generally agreed that the Star Spangled Banner is impossible to sing correctly and the lyrics are unfamiliar to most Americans. Our knowledge of history is horrid but at least we could adopt an anthem that describes our nation as it is.

"The National Anthem" is stirring, no doubt. However, in the hands of some singers, it can be horridly abused.
