I like to call this a "Musical Poem", because only these melodic rhythms that came to me that Midnight in July / Could possibly describe the events that came artfully together in the Appalachian sky! It is played entirely on drums of different kinds, with the good ol' drumset as the central driving force, and dual frame drums providing the melodic influence. The main theme is written in 5/4 time, almost with a straight-ahead marching feel, alternating with a fluid 3/4 pattern, dwelling on sixteenth-note triplets (these are at 0:33 and 1:37). It plenty of nice tom and snare fills, ending with paradiddles on two ride cymbals. 'Medianoche' is Spanish for 'midnight'.

This instrumental is from my latest homebrew CD, "Black Underwear". My home studio is rather primitive, but hey, it gets the job done (i.e., it's better than bouncing tracks between 2 boom boxes!). Actually, I wrote the bass line in 1993 (in the wonderfully DIRTY key of F-sharp (F#)), while stationed in Norfolk. I just got around to filling it out the rest of the way a couple years ago, so , anyway, here it is!

Wintertime in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge is one of the greatest times to visit the Sevier County area with millions of Christmas lights to make for a beautiful holiday landscape.
Not exactly known for five-star cuisine, the Great American does have some great food and atmosphere, and where else can you feed a family of 6 for under $30.00?
This Pigeon Forge Hotel, just minutes away from Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains, was excellent on every level. Although I'd gladly recommend it to anyone for the discount price we paid for our stay, I'd still be hesitant to pay peak-season rates for the room.
Hiking in the Smokies is a great year-round activity, just so long as you dress for the occasion, and be careful while driving in the higher elevations.
The story of the day my wife and I entered a souvenir shop during a day-trip to Pigeon Forge, and how I felt to see three caged bears sulking around on a concrete floor.
These are the first set of double bass drum pedals I have ever bought, and I still use them today. For the money, they are better than anything else in this price range.
This is the final cut of our 1995 EP. The silly name came about because we were so well-rehearsed (getting everything on the EP in just one take), that we had another 7 minutes left of paid, non-refundable recording time left. We did this song (yet unnamed and lyric-less, but they let me improvise a bass solo), and when we were finished, the recording engineer asked us to name it, and everyone went blank, except for Jason, who just said "plumb naked?", so we just took it because we needed to finish up and make room for the next band to record. The song became a crowd favorite (the hook's lyrics: "No policy for insanity", a morbidly self-prophetic canticle of the singer's future), and the name stuck all the way through the lifespan of Monday's Child.
This one never saw airplay (too hard for the time, I guess), but it was a crowd pleaser from the word go. This was usually the next to last song with "Dissolve" as the finisher. Our writing method was very simple; one of us showed up with the idea (usually me or Jon), then the other 3 layered their own ideas upon the original theme. This way, nobody had any idea what we'd end up with, but it was always something pretty special!
Some fellow CP's (Thanks, Kady and Tony) are djembe enthusiasts. As a musician, I felt compelled to investigate and review these unique drums, and where better to start than with ones made by Remo, the company who makes my favorite drumheads.

Just a little poem about the band that brought me the closest to breaking through that I've ever been. Thank you all for the kind words and helping me relive the memories!
This was Monday's Child's other local hit. This is more mellow, but still kinda edgy. Like "Walk Away", this was recorded in 1995 at Southern Sound studios in Knoxville, and has been played regularly on 103.5 WIMZ's "Tennessee Homegrown" show, 90.3 WUTK (The University of Tennessee's station), and the now-defunct 98.7 FM (The X) "Locals Only" show. Sometimes, I wonder what life would be like if we made it, but in the end, I thank God we didn't, because I would not have the great life I have now! We got two more we recorded during the Southern Sound sessions, and I will put them up soon.
In the nineties, I played bass in a band called Monday's Child (Jon Geoffrion - guitar; Terry Morgan - Singer; Jason Horner - drums), and this was our first studio cut back in 1995. With decent rotation on local rock stations, "Walk Away" became a pretty big local hit in Knoxville that year, and helped us to build a quite loyal following who came to hear us no matter WHAT hellhole we were booked at!

Located right off the Broadway exit of I-640, this wonderful family Christmas light display has flashing lights synchronized to the beat of the music of the season.
This is a mellow, yet edgy guitar duet played on 2 strats; one tuned in standard, the other tuned from B to B. The vocals are spoken word, and they came out kind of weak (which might just be a good thing), so here's the lyrics: Oh, no! I broke it! I broke it! It's broken! It's broken so bad, it can't be fixed! But I cannot bring myself to throw it away! So, I'll just hold onto it; Useless as it may be! What am I to do? What am I to do? I cry as I stare at all the pieces. How could I have been so damn careless! Dutifully, I pick them up with loving care, And I put them in my pocket to remind me of my loss. Carry them around everywhere I go! Oh, Well!
When you you pick one side or the other, half the people hate you. When you are a true independent thinker, almost everybody hates you!
