Gypsies Among You

A Real Life Gypsy Shares His Heritage and Culture

Rating: 4.6 of 5
By Timothy Sexton, published May 09, 2007
This video features photographs of real gypsies. They were taken by my grandfather and are photos of family and relatives. I am actually a gypsy; my grandmother was a palmist. I hope this series will educate and enlighten you as to the reality of gypsy life in the 20th century.

Our son is a Romani (gypsy) and I didn't know you had this out there! It is a totally different experience in Romana, where our son was treated to great racism and where he looks more like someone from India (Bury Me Standing has me wondering about those connections, India and Gypsies). Yes, you are so right about the Holocaust and Gypsies. This I know because my father was from Romania and only a handful of Gypsies survived from his town (my father was not a Gypsy) and only 5 of my father's high school classmates. All true, all eerie, all strong lives wisping away in ashes, ashes.

I think this is the coolest video I have seen on AC! Explaining our culture is a hard thing to do, but you did it beautifully. I just wish I had as many family photos as you do, there is only a single pic of my great grandfather, two of my grandfather and even my father had his first photo taken when he was 19 and decided to settle down. A definition of "gypsy" is: a person who moves from place to place. Most people probably do not know who the real gypsies are, so your series will sure to be educational as well as fun.

Love it! Great job. I was just researching gypsies last night so--coincidence that you were on the front page with this!

Cool. What a fascinating family history. You must be really excited that your grandfather documented this. Most families aren't so lucky with that. I really enjoyed your video.
